We give thanks for our blessings. Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. I do not think of all the misery, but of the glory that remains. Go outside into the fields, nature and the sun, go out and seek happiness in yourself and in God. Think of the beauty that again and again discharges itself within and without you and be happy. |

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It’s nice that we have Thanksgiving to remind us to be grateful, even though it’s a holiday that was gained at the expense of others who may not feel quite as warm and fuzzy about it. It might be even wiser to live each day from a place of gratitude, and not wait all year for the L-tryptophan to kick in and lull us into a euphoria of counted blessings. Still, if it takes a turkey to get us to stop and think about all that we’ve got on our life’s platter, then pass the drumsticks by all means. My gratitude has been cooking for quite some time now, with no prompting from the Pilgrims, as I’ve been aware of the multiple levels of support that are in my life. Many good things are happening to TRU, as well as to my career as an artist. (More of that later.) The fact that my partner’s Jersey-based family decided they wanted to do Thanksgiving this year at our place here in Manhattan only underscores the gifts life gives me. I lost my own parents 20 years ago, so it is nothing less than amazing that I now have another family that so totally accepts me. To say nothing of one of the dearest life partner’s one could ever wish for. I give thanks. And thank God I can roast a turkey. So many of us have such a fixed notion of what we need that we often overlook or undervalue the gifts that are offered. An actress friend of mine was devastated and distraught because a man who had invested in her show never showed up to see it; he plopped down a thousand dollars, and yet all she could think about was how hurt she was that he never plopped his tush down at a performance. Similarly, one of TRU’s greatest benefactors has failed to keep a few promises to show up for me; but unlike my actress friend, I accept my benefactor for who he is, and have come to accept the gifts he offers and not expect the gifts he is unable to give. People support us in the ways they know how, and to expect more is simply unreasonable. Some people give money, some people show up, others give us love and acceptance. These are all gifts of great value, and all to be treasured. And how extraordinary that we artists attract entire populations that do all three: pay, show up and actually applaud our efforts. That’s the home run that makes us feel triumphant; but we must not ignore the importance of the base hits that keep us in the game. We need to leave behind the disappointed child, crushed because daddy didn’t make it to that game or recital. A child doesn’t understand the labor and financial strain that daddy goes through to pay for that roof over their head, but an adult needs to be able to sort through emotions and recognize the genuine contributions that someone may be making to their life and/or career. And so I take the occasion of Thanksgiving to recite my litany. I am grateful that Robert Zukerman and the New York State Council on the Arts recognizes and supports the work that TRU does. I am grateful that the Friars National Foundation supports us. I am grateful that Howard L. Blau has been generous with TRU in so many ways. I am grateful for the people in and around TRU who are offering me genuine help in running the organization (I long to name names, but I know someone will be hurt if I leave them out.) I am grateful that “A Musical Journey” at Queens Theatre in the Park attracted a 75% capacity audience of people I have never met. I am grateful that an AIDS organization in Minneapolis wants to do an entire performance of my songs. I am grateful thgat the WorkShop Theatre is presenting a reading of a play of mine in January, directed by friend Linda Nelson. I am grateful that John Anastasi has chosen to produce two performances of “A Musical Journey” in Altoona Pennsylvania (yes, I’m going back to Altoona - see September’s editorial - and I am grateful even for that.) And I am grateful that the Altoona local newspaper has stepped in to co-produce, and will be running full page ads from December until we open on February 15th. (Imagine a New York paper offering that level of marketing partnership - no don’t, your brain might implode.) I am grateful for my friends, my new family, and most of all Gary. Okay, we don’t get everything we hope for. The Samuels Foundation turned down a recent grant proposal, as did several others. And I have even been told that Service Organizations are difficult to fund. (If they think funding a service organization is difficult, they should try to run one.) But last week’s benefit raised slightly more than we were asking from Samuels, another example of how the Universe often sends us answers from unexpected sources. (I think it’s the law of Karma: Howie Blau is generous to us, and we show our appreciation by honoring him at a benefit. And what happens? The Universe opens the floodgates, and more support comes pouring in than I ever reasonably expected. Last week’s benefit was possibly the biggest money-making fundraiser in TRU history, and so I am grateful to each and every one of you who showed up, sent us a check, or just love us. It all counts. And now we can afford to do four musicals in this year’s TRU Voices series, and commit to a real office space.) As I’ve said in previous columns, it is important to appreciate what we have, for by “appreciating” we “increase the value” of our life. And it makes room for more to come in. In spite of all the good news, there are circumstances that seriously threaten Gary and my security right now, and I won’t pretend that I’m not frightened at times. But I believe with all my heart that by focusing on the positive, by living in a place of gratitude, the Universe will come through with a solution to this challenge. I am grateful for my optimism. And valium. Highlights of the week. The highlight of my week has been the accounting from last week's benefit. I'm way too tired to go through the highlights of the Update. TRU member writer Yvonne Adrian brought one of the songs to our benefit last Sunday, sung by TRU friend and Advisory Board member Jana Robbins, and announced that the show was in a national competition in Milwaukee. The competition was for one-act shows appropriate for high schools, and now Yvonne tells us that the reduced version of nor'mal was honored with 5 Awards: Critics Choice, Two Acting Awards (to the mom & daughter), Best Director and Best Ensemble. Congratulations Yvonne, and to collaborators Tom Kochan and Cheryl Stern! TRU friend Martin Denton is ten years old! Well actually, his great website NYTheatre.com is celebrating its 10th birthday this Sunday 11/19! On November 19, 1996, nytheatre.com was launched on the Internet as Martin's Guide to New York Theatre. It grew quickly and spawned the nonprofit corporate umbrella, The New York Theatre Experience, Inc. in 1999; and from that came the "Plays and Playwrights" anthology series, of which the 8th annual volume is in production right now, targeted for publication next February. We love them as the home of a different kind of theatre coverage: coverage based in the populist, democratic, informal style of the World Wide Web. In Martin's words: "Our watchword became: leveling the playing field. Our mission became: advocacy and support for the underserved sectors of the NYC theatre community. Our reputation became (in the words of Kirk Bromley): an engine of enthusiasm for the art. In our first 10 years, nytheatre.com has helped invent online theatre coverage, and we've led the way in establishing the Net as a legitimate, respected source of theatre reviews." Happy Birthday! TRU member Linda Selman, currently in our Producer Mentoring Program, had a very successful exeprience producing her play The Bunner Sisters at the New York Society Library. It was so well received, that she received this letter from NYSL: "I wanted to thank you once more, and formally, for all the work you put into the lecture and reading of Bunner Sisters. I knew it would be extremely good, but it was even better than I expected-the play worked so well dramatically, the narration (I thought) perfectly integrated, and the actors were fantastic, really inside the text and tremendously expressive even given the space and movement constraints. Everyone who was there is raving about it and saying we must have more of this kind of event, and several people have also mentioned what a nice touch it was to have Bunner-related items in the exhibition cases. It was really just ideal overall." Down under puts him on top: our friend at Chameleon Theatre, Bob Carver, tell us that Johnny Montana was the winner of the award for Best New Film at the Australian International Film Festival. The reason he's excited is that the original screenplay by John Gavin is the basis for Chameleon's musical in development, No Money Down. The film was screened at the Queens International Film Festival on 11/18. Our dear friend Jamie deRoy tells us PS Classics, the label dedicated to the heritage of Broadway and American popular song, has joined forces with her on a new CD celebrating songwriters from the worlds of Broadway, pop, country and cabaret. This new album has a twist: the songwriters are also the performers. Entitled IF I SING, after the Maltby/Shire song from Closer Than Ever, the album features 16 songwriters taking on their own material, some of it familiar, some totally unknown, in new performances and new arrangements. The theatre composers include some of Broadway’s finest, including Stephen Schwartz, Maury Yeston, Richard Maltby & David Shire, Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx, Andrew Lippa, Lucy Simon, and Gretchen Cryer & Nancy Ford, while the pop songwriters include such luminaries as Grammy Award-winners Julie Gold and Larry Gatlin. Plus one of your editor Bob's best friends in the world, Emily Bindiger. The album, produced by Paul Rolnick, hit stores 11/14. Check it out on the web at psclassics.com No plain Jane, Karen Eterovich has created a beautiful Jane Austen one-woman show that continues to be booked all over the place. Cheer From Chawton: A Jane Austen Family Theatrical played 11/15 in the Byrd Center for Legislative Studies Auditorium on the campus of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia! Next stop: the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region V in Ames, Iowa this coming January 2007 and Wesley College in Dover, Delaware in February 2007! That's Karen all over, huh.
