* * * * * * * * * * * * We're ringing in the New Year with a new home. TRU is happy to announce we've moved into an office suite (sweet!) in The Players Theatre on MacDougal Street. If it takes a Village to raise a company, now we've got Greenwich. That was on the top of my Christmas wish list last year, so how gratifying it is to report that Santa really delivered! Also on the list was more help and more funding. The former materialized in the form of Jill Mendelsohn Lam who ran our Mentoring Program, Jamie Davyous Owens and Mary De Rosa who administered our Musicals Series, Jessica McCoy who helped put together the Fall panels, and new additions to our office staff: Tiara Yong and Rebecca Nesvet, who join administrator Annie Burns and our editors Liz Burke and Rob Lester in keeping us going day to day. And thanks to John Simmons, Anne Dixon and Michelle Brandon, and all who contributed articles to the TRU Voice newsletter. Our funding wish was granted (so to speak) by The Friars National Association Foundation, as well as a much-needed technical fund grant from NYSCA, in addition to the two-year grant they gave us in 2005. Oh yeh, and remember Howie Blau? Now let's see if Santa brings us support, at long long last, from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Along with the office space came a new theater space for our TRU Musicals Series: The Players Theatre itself, a landmark 199-seat house, daunting for us, since we have always been in 99-seat venues. And yet lo and behold! support flowed for all four of our musical presentations, and we darn near filled the house on all four nights. Along with the theater comes the support of owner Michael Sgouros and venue manager Saida. Congratulations on some successful marketing/producing to Joel & Phyllis Ehrlich (Friends Like These), Lisa Dozier and Matt Wolf (Hell Hole Honeys), Stephanie Rise and Jo Ann Cunningham (By the Numbers) and June Ospa and Daniel Neiden (Meester Amerika). And to an awesome lineup of panelists who generously gave of their time and knowledge: Pat Addiss, Jennifer Costello, Ken Davenport, Jack DePalma, Alexander Fraser, Pam Koslow, John LaRock, Jennifer Manocherian, Dan Markley, Linda Nelson, Lauren Stevens, Ricky Stevens, Kris Stewart, Jack Thomas, Larry Toppall, Ric Wanetik, Carl White and Cheryl Wiesenfeld. And thanks as always to Nadine Charlesen, this year's Volunteer of the Year, and her Kean College students who worked so hard doing tech and stage managing for the series. Who else? We officially thanked benefactor Howard Blau at a luncheon on November 12th, for endowing a new award for musical theater, but this level of support deserves to be acknowledged again. And thanks to everyone who came to the luncheon and made it the most successful benefit we've ever done. And those wonderul performers: Nancy Anderson, Gordon Stanley, Darren Ritchie, Neal Mayer, Traci Jai Edwards, Jana Robbins and Jane Summerhays! Personal thanks to Robert Zukerman and Susan Jonas, our guardian angels at NYSCA, and to our new friend at DCA Nellie Killian. Cheryl Wiesenfeld gets a second mention as another unsung hero of TRU, supporting us in meaningful and consistent ways, with a passionate belief in our mission and a particular interest in the scholarships we give to the Commercial Theater Institute. Did you know that Hal Hochhauser at Shakespeare Mailing generously donates our mailing services, and is an ongoing sponsor of our TRU Audition Event? We also thank Back Stage and Theatermania for sponsoring the TRU Audition in 2006, and fingers are crossed that they'll come on board again in 2007. Tal and Peter at Minuteman Press have always been true to their name, getting the TRU Voice newsletter printed in split-second turn-around time. And Bob Sickinger (former artistic director of Manhattan Theater Club back in the 60's) donates our phone service to us, and has every year since 1997. Check out his company at www.weanswer.com, and remember to support the people who support TRU. And where would I be without the love and support of my partner Gary Hughes? He was one of the founders of TRU, and our treasurer for nearly ten years. And though he has pulled away from running the organization, TRU is still run mostly from our apartment (the transition down to The Players Theatre will be gradual), and I couldn't do any of this without his patience and understanding. And for all his griping about how TRU has taken over my life, he single-handedly put together our holiday party last weekend, decorating every room with meticulous artistry, and cooking enough for the 100+ TRU members who celebrated the holiday with us. There could be no greater gift in my life. Perhaps I could take a moment to thank everyone who has supported Theater Resources Unlimited in 2006, to let every reader out there know that I am grateful for your interest, and hopeful that you will continue to use the Update to help each other, and to spread a feeling of community throughout our often-cold, seemingly indifferent business. And I would be grateful for your letters of appreciation, typed on letterhead and signed and mailed to the office here at 309 W. 104th Street, 1D, NYC NY 10025. If we have helped you in any significant way, I can use your letters to approach funders. E-mails don't work, but letters are tremendously helpful. * * * * * * * * * * * * Here's a nice Christmas present we got from one of the people in the TRU Mentorship program: a short letter about her experiences in the program. Perhaps it will inspire more of you to apply for a Mentorship. If interested, send a hard copy letter of interest to us describing your background and your interest in producing: Theater Resources Unlimited, TRU Mentorship, 309 W. 104th Street 1D, NYC NY 10025. A Mentee’s Toolkit I was told once that I had a great toolkit towards my aspirations of becoming a successful musical theater producer: I was raised in L.A. by “Old Hollywood” performer parents (i.e. I had a high tolerance for quirkiness), I was a trained classical pianist (i.e. musical directors didn’t scare me that much), I was a CPA specializing in the entertainment industry (i.e. a bean-counter with a broad perspective), I was a successful restaurateur (i.e. I learned how to get butts in seats for two hours each day and night in order to pay the rent). I had also twice raised money for creative enterprises, was a natural networker, and had a project to which I was passionately dedicated to developing. My toolkit was simply bursting! Ok, I didn’t yet have the technical knowledge, that is true. No matter! I moved to NY, completed the 14-week CTI program, read every book published on the subject of creating musicals, saw every show, and attended every panel, conference and festival. I even invested in a show or two. Broadway here I come! The truth is, there was still one thing lacking, actually two. The first was direct producing experience, which led to the second – direct access to the powers that be. Unfortunately for me, these were things I couldn’t buy, borrow, study for or re-gift. But then I joined TRU, and the very first newsletter I read referred to their producing Mentorship program. Now I realize being from L.A. might make me a tad more jaded than most, but I found it hard to believe that a living breathing seasoned producer I had never met was prepared to just give these things to me, and for the practically free price of my membership dues. In short, after a brief interview with the TRU folks, and a fun round of ‘matchmaking’ with some prospective Mentors, I officially began my Mentorship in September. I now have a wonderful Broadway (!) producer in my corner who to date has reviewed my project and gave honest, constructive and encouraging feedback, assesses (and reassesses) my game plan, helps me prioritize, gives me well needed reality checks, and urges me forward. In an environment that sometimes feels like a one-step-forward-three-steps-back process, I now feel that my toolkit truly runneth over. We would sure be grateful if more of you would take advantage of the TRU Deals! – Did you order the laughs? Zany Room Service delivers a 40% discount - extended through January! Greene, who has produced more plays in the TRU Voices series than anyone - and has won our "Producer's Award" no less than twice - has taken a giant leap beyond staged readings. With his company The StoryLine Project LLC, he has been instrumental in moving the Peccadillo Theatre's smash hit production of the classic screwball farce Room Service to off-Broadway. This limited run garnered raves from the Times and other critics, and has won the praise of Hal Prince, no less, who sings its praises in The Daily News (click here to read the article). The show has been so successful that it has extended its limited run; and R.K. is offering TRU friends a great discount if you order before 12/31. Click for TRU Deals. Former TRU Board member Richard Skipper is going to Washington. He was invited by The National Theatre in Washington DC to bring his "Evening with Carol Channing" show back on January 29th, 2007 to celebrate Carol Channing's 86th Birthday! (The last time Richard performed there, he sold out BOTH shows!) TRU member and friend Linda Nelson tells us that her company Shotgun Productions started the 2006-2007 Season with a bang: a concert at The Schoenberg Center in Vienna, Austria! The evening featured music by Richard Strauss and Schoenberg of course. Always a woman of extremes, Linda and Shotgun are following this class evening with the ultimate lowbrow experience: Don't Hug Me... A Love Story with Singin' and Stuff at the NJ Repertory, a karaoke musical that's as hokey as Schoenberg is highbrow. But it's tremendously popular, and it has book and lyrics by Phil Olson, who was represented in the TRU Voices Series a few years back by a play called Life After Dad. We're pleased to report that a play from our 2005 TRU Voices Series has surfaced in a recent reading. Where the Rain Never Falls by two-time TRU Voices playwright and member Ric Siler had a reading earlier this week at the Abingdon Theatre.... And TRU playwright Monica Bauer (honorable mention in the 2006 TRU Voices Series) reminds us that opportunities come from unexpected places (just ask me about Altoona). The Nebraska Repertory Theater, a professional company attached to the University of Nebraska's Johnny Carson School of Theater, Film, and Television, will be developing her newest play, My Occasion of Sin. They will bring her out for a two week development period this March, then they will bring her out this July, for another rehearsal period culminating in a staged reading open to the public. If that goes well, there will be a full production in the 2008 season. Oh, Monica's from Nebraska, which might explain the surge of interest from the midwest. Congratulations to TRU friend and supporter Jan Koehler on celebrating her 30th year as a licensed massage therapist. Folks we've referred to her have all been very positive about her healing skills. Dear TRU - ~ From the Editorial Page of The New York Sun, by Francis P. Church, September 21, 1897 There's nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child. I applaud you on all the work you do for this newsletter. I do find it hard to find some of the links – like the update link you mentioned. I think it’s my age. I'm certainly willing to know about anyone’s cabaret or theater appearance. Ya neva know. It’s always worth checking things out. It’s the internet part that takes me a lot of time. ~Bobbie H. At this Thanksgiving time, I am TRUly thankful for you and the time and effort you put into the organization and website. Your Thanksgiving sounds wonderful - a real family occasion. May everyone be so blessed. ~Janet Barnes Thanks for the mention in the Update!!! I still can't figure out HOW I got onto Jamie [deRoy]'s CD, but I'm thrilled to be on it. ~ Emily Bindiger Thanks for featuring two of our fabulous friends...Martin Denton (a saint) and Karen Eterovich (a bud)! Keep up the good work! ~The "gang" at Theater Ten Ten Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones. I am happy your recent luncheon was a success. ~ David Conforte Many thanks (in keeping with the theme of the week) for making TRU possible, and for taking the time to send feedback to all writers - that's definitely more than most organizations will take the time to do! I look forward to the responses of the readers, and wish you the happiest of holidays. ~Reynaldi Lolong, Encore Theatre Company Click here to return to top of page |

Somehow, not only for Christmas, But all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others, Is the joy that comes back to you.
And the more you spend in blessing, The poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart's possessing, Returns to you glad.

NEW! LET YOUR TRU VOICE BE HEARD: SUBMISSIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED!
Producers and theater companies are invited to let Theater Resources Unlimited pay for a reading of a new play. (Writers, too.) We seek producer-driven projects for our Spring '07 TRU Voices New Plays Reading Series, but we will do our best to find producers for writers that need one. We encourage a variety of full length works, from mainstream commercial to off-beat non-traditional. Must be at least 75 minutes, and whatever the length, you must present it in 90 minutes maximum. No musicals at this time; submissions for our musicals series will open in June. Readings are followed by an industry panel to help guide you to the next level of production. We expect to do the readings in our new home at The Players Theater on MacDougal Street. Submission deadline: 1/20/07 (with producer), 1/13/07 (without a producer). For application and guidelines, visit the TRU home page at www.truonline.org and click the links in the "2007 TRU Voices" section. You may also mail us an SASE requesting application/guidelines: Theater Resources Unlimited, TRU Voices, 309 W. 104th Street 1D, NYC NY 10025. Inquiries may be emailed to trunltd@aol.com

An additional 1500 will be distributed throughout the community. Last year's categories incldued acting a vocal coaches, classes, marketing and PR services, Health and Fitness, and much more. And it's a great place to advertise your theater company's upcoming show or season. THE
WRITER'S BLOCK
The world's literature and folklore are full of stories
that point out how futile it can be to seek happiness.
Rather, happiness is a blessing that comes to you as you go along;
a treasure that you incidentally find.

GOT A SET TO BREAK DOWN? NEED A SET TO PUT UP?
The Set Recycling Hot-line lets you give away your set pieces to a show that needs them, or get the pieces you need. It works like this: a show is closing, and needs to get rid of its set. Rather than throw it out, they can give it to you. Or you need some specific set pieces, and you want to find out if anyone out there has them. Of course, none of this works unless you plan well in advance and list your offers/needs at least a month ahead of time. It's a matter of timing. And all the carting is up to you - there's no handy trucking service connected with this. For more info, or to start using the service, call Julia Rubin at 212.673.6343. Please mention TRU!

- LIVING SITUATIONS -
Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year
when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall.
We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall,
then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2,000 years ago followed a star,
week after week, until it led them to a parking space.

TRU WORD OF MOUTH
-
The past with its pleasures, its rewards, its foolishness, its punishments,
is there for each of us forever, and it should be.
~Lillian Hellman
NEW:
You may feel a little like a dog for laughing at The Little Dog Laughed, but you probably won't be able to help yourself. This is a mean-spirited, viciously funny play by a breathlessly bitchy Douglas Carter Beane with a once-in-a-lifetime comic performance by Julie White who is amazing. I never thought she would live up to the hype and the reviews, but she jumps into her portrait of a bloodless vampire of an agent/manager with such perverse elan that she could make us see the humanity in Hitler. The rest of the cast is fine, but completely at her mercy. The play has a few bumps, and the steady flow of Beane mots are occasionally arch, but the play has surprising passion and more than a little rage as the playwright spins a tale of a closeted movie star who sells his soul to redecorate his closet. ~Bob
I loved [Jay Johnson: The Two and Only] - thought Jay was fantastic. I remember him from "Soap" and the 70's but I really had no idea how wide his scope of talent is. I laughed and I cried and I thought he had so much heart and so little ego that it made him flawless. I don't know if you saw it, but I could swear by the end that Darwin the monkey was moving by itself... ~ Mary
PREVIOUS:
Ventriloquism may or may not be your thing, but whatever your position on talking dummies (political figures aside), you are in for a genuine surprise with Jay Johnson: The Two and Only. Despite all the carved wooden figures and inanimate objects that come to life on stage, this is one of the most human performances you will find in New York. It's not just that Johnson is skilled at his very special art - and he does some amazing, hilarious and totally nutty things up there - but that he is so passionate about what he does. The man is a true artist, and his enthusiasm about the history of ventriloquism and his willingness to share intimately about the moments and people that have influenced his career, transform what could be an evening of clever parlour tricks into something rich, entertaining and ultimately enlightening. Every one of us who makes art, in whatever form, can relate to Johnson and how his life has shaped his art; you may even be inspired. You may fondly remember him as the daft younger brother on TV's Soap, part of one the finest comedy ensembles in TV history; on his own, he breathes life not only into his wooden partners, but into the current Broadway season. Please do not miss this rare performance; his unique voice may throw you, in very surprising ways. ~Bob
I saw a fabulous play called Bad Evidence at the Big Little Theatre on Ridge St. I think its the same building that used to be Present Company. It's directed by Louis Lopardi, a wonderful director who usually directs classics but does a great job with this play. The stage is remarkably tiny, but the staging is so specific, economical and intimate that it flows beautifully. It's also very well acted. All directors can learn a lesson about working in intimate spaces from Louis's work in this production. The audience loved the show, and I encourage everyone to check this out. There are only a few more performances left. ~Julie Halpern
In Changing Violet, Deborah Louise Ortiz managed to turn a painful issue into a wonderful evening with her humor, her fabulous smile, and those dance moves! I heard toes tapping all around me. How wise of her production team to decorate the set with the simple clothesline and prop table. Deborah's choice of music could not have been more appropriate. Its upbeat nature helped make the entire story totally entertaining. This, in spite of the subject matter although that resolved itself well into an uplifting message, making us cheer for the triumph of this talented woman and wish for her continued success. ~ Susan Laubach

- SPECIAL EVENTS/THEATER OFFERINGS -
(listed chronologically, unless I get confused)
In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season;
the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church;
the Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue;
the atheists went to parties and drank.
People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanukkah!'
or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!'
