* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The winter Olympics got me thinking a lot about how really hard we tend to be on ourselves. Okay, I know the whole point is that this is a world-class competition. The best of the best. The pinnacle of human potential. Yet I am constantly dismayed at how brutally these talented athletes are judged. As if their remarkable prowess weren't astonishing enough without breaking world records; as if it weren't breathtaking enough to watch them skate, ski, skateboard and seduce us with extraordinary acts of physical strength and grace that far exceed anything the rest of us are remotely capable of. Mistakes are not permitted. Perfection is required. And if Sasha Cohen should have a small fall, it nearly negates the amazing talent she displays in the rest of her program. And how disappointed the commentators sound as they speak of her "once again not living up to her potential"! These clucking, disapproving parents letting us know that the children have let us all down again. I suppose that is what the Olympics is about. Perfection. Trouble is, we seem to live our lives according to the same damnably unattainable principles. As a society, we are so unforgiving of human flaws, so impatient with modest achievement, so demanding of Olympic levels of success. Olympus was where the gods lived, and while it is noble to aspire to godliness, is it really the reason why we're all here on this earth? In human form? Sadly, even art, that most human form of expression, is subject to the same stringently god-like judgments. We have even invented professional judges called critics who we place on lofty pedestals so we can look up while they shame us with their wagging fingers. And we have turned art into business and placed expectations of profit on our creativity. I recall a NY Times article many years ago in which playwright Marsha Norman bemoaned the "home run mentality" of American theater. Every time we step up to the plate, we are required to hit one out of the ball park. There is no longer an acceptance of modest achievement, an appreciation of a well-batted single. Consequently, the pressure on most of us artists is so great that we have far too little opportunity to grow and develop. We need permission to make mistakes, to be far less than perfect. And we need to find a community, a society, a government, an audience that cheers us on enthusiastically even if we have a momentary Sasha Cohen-like fall at some point in our long program. Of course, while we wait for the world to grow kinder and gentler, we could take a more sympathetic view of ourselves. Like Salieri jealously raging at being reduced by posterity to a minor talent, we fail to notice what we have actually accomplished. We dismiss our small victories and overlook perfectly fine, rich and rewarding moments of achievement. Certainly let us all continue to aspire - "Or what's a heaven for?" as Robert Browning asked - but with the understanding that perfection is probably an impossibie illusion; and quantifiable, measurable judgments of success are often just opinions when you come right down to it. Even the different Olympic judges score the same performances differently, and those official sounding point scores simply give an aura of tangibility to something that may not be quite so tangible. And who the hell is Simon Cowell anyway? When you come right down to it, why should we even define ourselves by what we achieve? It is the quality of our relationships, not the quality of our accomplishments, that defines our worth. It is who we are, not just what we do, that matters. But I still dream of winning that Tony Award. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Last chance to sign up as an auditor for the Audition Weekend. We now have 44 producing companies reserved for the March 25-26 TRU Audition Event. We have moved to a larger space to accommodate more companies, so there's stlll room for you! The weekend will run from 9:30am to 5:50pm on Saturday and Sunday, at the Abingdon Theater, 312 W. 36th Street, 1st floor. If you are interested in sitting in on these two days of auditions, and seeing more than 190 performers, you must respond soon. Priority spots are given to TRU members, but remaining spots will be filled on a first-to-email us basis. So email us already, at trunltd@aol.com with "I want to be an auditor" as your header. Beyond the Boroughs ... Click here to return to top of page * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Nice things happen to TRU friends. How about bad musicals happen to TRU friends ... as in the Bad Musical Festival? Well, it's actually very nice that Fran Handman has had her piece invited into the festival. The name of the song/sketch is If You Were a Virgo Ascending, sketch and lyrics by Fran Handman, music by William Niederkorn. Fran was recently a finalist in the TRU Voices New Musicals Reading Series for her show The Adding Machine, and her series director Robert McMaster will be helming once again downtown.... And Jack Dyville's got it bad, too. He writes: Thanks for the email about needing directors for the Bad Musical Festival. I went down and met with Melba after sending my resume and now I am directing The Sound of Wizards which is a parody of (what else?) The Sound of Music crossed with Wizard of Oz. It spoofs the fact that George W needs a BRAIN and new BALLS!!! And I've decided to go a step further on this parody concept by having all the performers play a 'Sweeny Todd-like Instrument!' However we will only be putting together a good ole southern boys 'Kitchen Band'.... We're SO-O-O Ba-a-ad! We also sent the festival these TRU directors: Rob Cardazone (directing Desiree of Beverly Hills) and Shana Solomon (directing The Beautiful Brown Danube). From Bad to Good: we made a match made in heaven... we put Van Hill Entertainment together with the musical Saint Heaven for our recent Musicals Reading Series, and now Van Dean and Hillary Cutter are moving the show into a next step production. The World Premiere production of Saint Heaven will be at the Truglia Theater, a 700 seat theater in Stamford Center for the Arts' Rich Forum theater complex located in the heart of downtown Stamford, CT. The run is currently scheduled from June 1st - June 11th.... More news from the recent TRU Musicals Series: Eva Price tells us that Sunfish will be presented at The Alliance Theater in Atlanta as part of the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition, on April 13th at 7pm. She writes: "The night you witnessed the magic of Sunfish in NYC, it was a monumental night for the Sunfish creative team as well. With your response, reaction, and feelings, you have helped us expand, realize, and develop the beauty and integrity of this sensational musical. It has grown, and the end result is even MORE amazing." TRU Advisory Board member Sandi Durell advises us that her daughter is giving birth ... to a new book. She's actually due in the fall, and the offspring will be named "Been There, Done That, Kept the Jewelry". It's about relationships. Sandi also brags that her daughter's a PhD. with a new radio show that will be launching shortly. It's a call in/talk show. The book will be featured at the Washington, DC Book Fair in May. It comes out in stores in Sept/Oct. Sandi can be heard talking about her daughter's achievements in convenient New York locations starting ... well, now. T.E.S.T. Theater was recently nominated for a grant, when a representative of The Josephine Foundation came to see their production of The Andersonville Trial. They think it's extra cool because they didn't even have to apply. The play was produced by TEST Theater founders and TRU members Jessica Morris and Kristofer Holz, and they found cast member Moti Margolin through the TRU Auditions. Sue “Dr. Sue” Horowitz now hosts an Internet Radio Show: Creative Conversations.com It features interviews with creative, exciting people behind the hot shows, books, films, recordings… with smart, savvy advice to help you "Create the life you want!" Also great music to uplift your spirit! Look for it on Tribeca Radio.net: Tues-11am; Thurs - 9pm; Sun - 1pm. And coming up on May 13th, songwriter Sue and pianist partner Laura Paulman (the "New York Upbeats") will perform her original song "Celebrate Your Life" at the New York Sheet Music Society, Musicians Local 802, 322 W. 48th Street (between 8-9th Ave), NYC Click here to return to top of page * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * If you don't read the Update every week, you might want to go to the TRU On-Line Newsletter to check for previous weeks' postings that may still be useful for you. - Dear TRU - What is a soul? It's like electricity - we don't really know what it is, One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done. I was very moved by your tribute to your friend Wesley Jones and I send you my heartfelt condolences on your tragic loss. A friendship takes a really long time to be forged in the fire of experience and habit and not even a very rich man can buy such a thing. That you said he was a year younger than you also struck me. We are all too young (if I may include myself). God Bless. ~Bobb Goldsteinn All I can say is that I hope I merit a eulogy even half so fine from my friends. Thank you for sharing your joy and loss with us all. ~Gregg Lauterbach My sincere condolences on the loss of your friend Wes. You write so movingly about your relationship with him. When it's my time to go, I hope you'll consider doing a eulogy as eloquent for me (and hopefully, from the stage of the Schoenfeld Theater or some other wonderful space!!) ~ Joan I don’t know if this will reach you – but what a lovely testament to your friend Wes. Beautifully written, moving, and an important message for all to read. ~Deborah Vines What an exquisite tribute to a friend! And what wonderful things it reveals about you! ~ Elena Kondracki I'm very sorry to hear about your friend Wes's passing. What a sad thing to happen for Valentine's Day. ~John C. Wrong Way Up and Pirates of Penzance will also be featured at the 5/9 Arts Initiative event sponsored by St. George’s Society at the National Arts Club. Monday 3/27 at 6 PM. The work is described as a cross between A Hard Day’s Night and Catch Me If You Can. Pirates of Penzance is too well-known to require description. It is produced by The Blue Hill Troupe, which has been performing Gilbert & Sullivan to raise money for New York City charities for over 80 years. HEY! DOESN'T ANYONE WANT TO TALK BACK TO BACK STAGE?
Our friends at Back Stage want you to submit articles to their new "Talk Back" column. Why are you giving them the silent treatment? Don't you have something provocative or informative or unusual to say about this business we're in? They really, really want to hear from people in the industry who have some issue or idea that they feel strongly about. The column is about 650 words, and they will pay an honorarium if your article is selected for publication. When you're ready to Talk Back, email your column to Managing Editor David Sheward at: DSheward@backstage.com
ONGOING! TRU PRODUCER MENTORING PROGRAM!
Accepting applications for aspiring producers who want to join our mentoring program this year. We have an interest in developing Producers of Color, but all are welcome. Send us a brief letter expressing your interest in being mentored, and telling us a little about your goals and/or experience as a producer. Mentorships are in three-month cycles, and the next opportunities will be July-September and October-December. Deadline for next cycle of mentorships: 5/5. Questions may be sent here to TRUnltd@aol.com
STILL NEED WRITERS FOR THE TRU NEWSLETTER!
Do you have an idea for an interesting article or interview? Would you like to write for the TRU print newsletter, the TRU Voice? We would like to have a pool of writers available to call upon for articles on an ongoing basis. Our particular thrust, as always, is the needs and interests of producers and theater companies, as opposed to individual artists. However, if you have an idea for a 500-1000 word article that you'd like to write for us, email Bob at TRUnltd@aol.com and we can discuss it. We are always happy to have someone cover our monthly panels, as well. The TRU Voice goes out to about 2000 readers every other month, and it is distinctly different in content from the TRU Update, our online newsletter.

The Set Recycling Hot-line lets you give away your set pieces to a show that needs them, or get the pieces you need. It works like this: a show is closing, and needs to get rid of its set. Rather than throw it out, they can give it to you. Or you need some specific set pieces, and you want to find out if anyone out there has them. Of course, none of this works unless you plan well in advance and list your offers/needs at least a month ahead of time. It's a matter of timing. And all the carting is up to you - there's no handy trucking service connected with this. For more info, or to start using the service, call Julia Rubin at 212.673.6343. Please mention TRU!

NEED AN ACTING CLASS
THAT WILL PROPEL YOUR CAREER FORWARD?
New agent-taught series of classes, with $20 off for TRU readers! As an actor, are you frustrated by: Not being able to secure the audition appointments you know should be yours, not getting callbacks when you go to an audition, not feeling truly comfortable with your audition technique, not feeling truly comfortable with "cold reading" auditions, not finding monologues that suit you and your talents well, not finding monologues that are not already "done to death" by other actors, not finding a teacher who is well-versed in ways of helping you to achieve your career goals, not working with a teacher armed with a wealth of information, knowledge and experiences, willing to reinforce his thoughts and ideas with a veritable trove of anecdotal material, much of it gleaned from his own life and the lives of friends and colleagues? Then you are in luck! Lewis R. Chambers (who founded The Bethel Agency nearly 38 years ago and who has represented actors in all major media) plans a series of 3 or 4 classes during the months ahead. Classes are arranged in blocks of four each, meeting on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings, as well as on Saturday mornings from 10 AM to 1 PM. Evening class hours are flexible -- some will begin at 6:00 or 6:30 PM, while others will, in all probability, begin at 7 PM, ending three hours later. Classes are basically scene study, monologues, audition technique, cold readings and, at times, a bit of improv. Informal meetings follow most classes, enabling students to learn more about the business part of their careers. Classes, of four meetings each, are priced at $180 ($160 when you mention TRU), with a non-refundable deposit of $100 to be paid ten days before the start of any skein of classes and the balance to be paid at the first class. For more detailed information, Mr. Chambers is reachable at 212.864.4510 or at either of two Email addresses: chambers_bethel@yahoo.com or BethelAgcy@aol.com

WOODSTOCK
FRINGE PLAYWRIGHTS UNIT!
Resuming January 2006 in NYC: The Woodstock Fringe Playwrights Unit is informed
by the belief that the act of creation is an act of courage. A group
of playwrights, composers, lyricists, book writers and actors assemble every
other week to share and develop new work. The culture is one of community,
nourishment, honor, mutual respect, and professionalism. This workshop is
best suited to self-guided professionals in pursuit of excellence, who desire
creative connection, collaboration with peers and share excitement and joy
in the creative process. Writers share pages or scenes from works-in-progress
which are read by professional actors. They then may, at their choice, invite
their colleagues to comment on the work in a structured critique designed
to serve the needs of the creator. While there are few rules about the work
developed at the Unit, unfinished work, free of commercial constraints or
contractual obligations is encouraged. Ten sessions will take place between
January and May. At the end of the 2005 session, participants will have the
opportunity to have their work read in staged readings to an invited audience.
Participation by writers is $75.00 for ten sessions to cover the cost of studio
rental. Hundreds of play scripts, synopses, treatments, performance art works,
and musical theatre works have made their way to Woodstock Fringe. We read
them all and respond to those who have submitted their work. Admission to
the Unit is by invitation and application. Applicants are asked to submit
a resume and a 10-15 page sample of their work to: PLAYWRIGHTS UNIT, WOODSTOCK
FRINGE, PO Box 157, Lake Hill, NY 12448 or by e-mail to wnorman@woodstockfringe.org.

TRU WORD OF MOUTH
-
The past with its pleasures, its rewards, its foolishness, its punishments,
is there for each of us forever, and it should be.
~Lillian Hellman
NEW:
"I don't know your taste in theater but I saw something called Stan Won't Dance at P.S. 22 - John Rockwell's review was orgasmic in Friday's Times - and it was indeed pretty amazing stuff, what the Brits call Physical Theater. If you can get a ticket, it's well worth seeing. And if you do, get there early. Seats are not assigned." -Barbara S.
PREVIOUS:
I saw Talk of the Town at the Algonquin last Sunday, and it was a lot of fun. My friend Doug Shapiro is the understudy for George S. Kaufman, and it was a great coincidence that my mother gave me tickets for a performance he was in! It's a cute show, one of those where the cast is somewhat better than the material. My only real problem is that I know all about the Round Table backwards and forwards, and the participants. So this one extended part, where they were trotting out all of the famous witticisms, the entire audience was roaring, except me. I'd heard or read them all a million times! One poor actor had me right in his sightline, and finally he shifted his eyes! ~Elisa D.
Saw a magnificent show at The National in London, Coram Boy, adapted by Helen Edmundson from the novel by Jamila Gavin and directed and co-designed by Melly Still. Huge generational scope of story about foundlings in Georgian England, elegantly done with some surprisingly inventive yet simple effects. Character work is Dickensian reminicent of Nicholas Nickleby. Interweaves Handel throughout with a cast of 20 plus chorus and small orchestra. It's a hit at the Olivier and hard to get tickets. Difficult to work commercially and doubt it could make the leap across the Atlantic. If traveling to London, buy advance tickets. ~RK Greene
Two shows have been running recently that artfully demonstrate the dangers of certainty. One is a kind of musical that has closed; the other a distinguished drama that has changed casts since I saw it. If you missed either, I weep for you, although the play can and must be seen with its new cast.
The musical is Souvenir by Stephen Temperley, with Judy Kaye, who we always knew was remarkable and has never been moreso than in this spectacular tour de force of a performance. She played the artistically deluded Florence Foster Jenkins, a society woman who was steeped in the certainty that she could sing, gave recitals and even a Carnegie Hall concert, sold thousands of tickets and was universally laughed at. Much has been said about her in reviews, but not enough has been said about her costar Donald Corren, witty, urbane, as gay as Noel Coward and ultimately complex and touching as Jenkins' co-dependent music director, Cosme McMoon. From the in-crowd ravings throughout the community, I almost thought this was a one-person show. Absolutely not. Corren is an essential factor in a delicate equation. The story unfolds through his eyes, and he guides, glides and virtually glissades us through it. And if we are paying attention, we even realize that he is the thematic soul of the story, though Kaye may be the heart. The buzz about the show led me to expect a brilliantly executed gimmick: hear Judy Kaye sing mercilessly off-pitch to the point where you long for the next wrong note, and then relax as the dissonance is resolved and she redeems herself in a perfectly sung fantasy sequence at the end. So painfully simple. And absolutely hilarious, I might add. And it turns out there is so much more to it. This is not the singular story of an idiosyncratic 1930's phenomenon; it is the story of every artist who hears or sees beauty within our head, and raises the disturbing question of whether the world perceives our art as we perceive it. The title of the piece sadly tosses away the importance of the theme, and makes me wonder if the creators could have used a bit more of Jenkins' unabashed certainty of the rightness of what they have created. In Jenkins eyes, Cosme is forced to see a reflection of himself as a failed artist, and I felt shivers of doubt run through me as I considered my own assumptions about my ability to bring beauty into this world.
An even more chilling tale of certainty is the Pulitzer Prize winning Doubt by John Patrick Shanley. There is not much to be added to the hallelujah chorus of praise that has rightfully greeted this finely crafted work, nor to the bravas that have cheered on Cherry Jones' bravura performance as the self-righteous, steel-hearted Sister Aloysius, a nun who values principles over people. The finely tuned detail and technique of this actress is apparent in her body language, her smallest gesture, her every frosty New England inflection. One almost wants to run out and find an exorcist to rid Miss Jones of the demon that inhabits her habit. On reflection, that demon is certainty, the theme of my pair of reviews. And Jones is finally free of it, having been replaced last week by the redoubtable Eileen Atkins. The great irony is that playwright Shanley is so utterly in control of a play that he has named Doubt, every moment carefully chosen to illustrate a facet of his theme, every line molded into delicious morsels of rich, reverberating communication. (Even Jones' stage business of wrapping protective fabric around her plants to prevent a frost that hasn't even approached is a thoughtful metaphor for this religious woman's obsession with keeping the devil at bay before he's even knocked at her door.) This is one of the most lucid plays I have ever seen, in spite of it dealing with the ambiguous and elusive nature of truth. I might quibble with the slight obviousness of some of the sermons preached by Sister Aloysius' primary target, the morally doubted Father Flynn, and I did have trouble with Irish actor Brian F. O'Byrne overly thick low-class American accent (Bronx by way of Killarney, I believe); but he was a dynamic acting match for Jones, and sparks flew constantly in the battle for survival between these two opponents. In case you haven't heard, the impetus for drama in this piece is that Sister Aloysius brings accusations of impropriety against Flynn, based not on clear evidence but rather on her inner certainty. I found myself thinking of Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour in which a malicious child destoys lives by spreading "a lie with a seed of truth" in it; only in this case, the character spreads a truth that may not be as pure and simple as she thinks. And it is left uncertain as to whose life has truly been destroyed. With this thoughtful work, Shanley offers a humane and generous gift to all of us: the comfort of understanding that our doubts are the core of our humanity. I can't help wondering: if Sister Aloysius had applied her energies and convictions to art instead of religion, would she have been another Florence Foster Jenkins? ~ Bob
Speaking of wonderful performers, you could do a lot worse than to spend an evening with Liz Larsen, Klea Blackurst, Janet Getz and Liz McCartney: four musical comedy queens that should add up to a full house. So I sure hope a lot more of you nice folks will head down to St. Luke's Theater and take a gander at Bingo! The Musical, a small package of big talent. It's slim but fun, with no pretensions at being anything more than an evening of trashy silliness. Or silly trashiness. Plus two chances for you to play and win Bingo (yes, there's actually money paid out to the lucky winners). And free Sara Lee cake. The other cast members are equally game, and deserve mention: the charmingly unstrung and possibly unstable Beth Malone, the relentlessly good-natured Chevi Colton and Michael Pemberton, who was subbing for Patrick Ryan Sullivan the night we were there. Check your intellect at the door, and suspend your disbelief at the reckless audacity of writers Ilene Reid, Michael Heitzman and David Holcenberg. This is what off-Broadway used to be like. ~Bob
Doubt, brilliantly written and performed, gripped me from start to finish. I left the theater reeling from the wounds of a bitterly-fought war, uncertain of the priest's guilt or innocence, and faced with my own unsettling inclination to jump to conclusions. While patrons' reactions varied, with some finding guilt and others innocence, no one was indifferent. The experience reminded me of the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas case. You can listen to both sides all you want, but only Anita and Clarence will ever know for certain what happened between them behind closed doors. ~Anne Dixon
