I have always strenuously supported the right of every man to his own opinion,
however different that opinion might be to mine.
He who denies another this right makes a slave of himself to his present opinion,
because he precludes himself the right of changing it.

~ attributed to Thomas Paine, 1783
[compliments of new TRU Board member Rob Schatz]

Statistics show that we lose more fools on this day
than on all other days of the year put together.
This proves, by the numbers left in stock,
that one Fourth of July per year is now inadequate,
the country has grown so.

~Mark Twain

In honor of the 4th of July, I am liberating myself from writing an editorial. If you are disappointed, you will absolutely make my day by writing and saying so. Meanwhile, why not spend the time reading "Nice things happen to TRU friends..." (there's quite a lot happening) and then perusing the listings to see if anyone needs you as much as I do.

And just to pique your curiosity: we will soon be announcing some exciting news about this year's TRU Musicals Series. Stay tuned. Or rather, open and click the next issue or two.

Highlights of the week. Sherry Eaker and BackStage have joined us in producing the next TRU panel, "I Produce Dead People...The Challenges of Bringing the Classics to Life". It's not until July 18th, but better reserve early!... Submissions are now open for the TRU Musicals Reading series. Not to mention that we are accepting ongoing inquiries about the TRU Producer Mentoring program. (see TRU Opportunities)... Help rebuild the New Orleans libraries, ruined by Katrina. They need donations of books. (see Goods/Help Wanted)... Opportunities in Arkansas, Princeton and La Jolla (see Reaching Out)... The Best of the Bad need some really good impersonators. It's Festival Time! SPF Summer Play Festival kicks off July 10th, and there are a pair of terrific industry panels that day and on the closing day, July 24th. Check out the details at TRU Opportunities. The Fresh Fruit Festival kicks off its celebration of gay, lesbian, bi- and transgender artists. Dedicated to the more exotic of the fruits, this one also runs from July 10th through July 23rd. And The Midtown International Theater Festival opens July 17th for three weeks of comedies, dramas and solo works at The WorkShop Theaters and the Where Eagles Dare Theatre. (For your added convenience, Fresh Fruit and Midtown will have shows running in the same 312 W. 36th Street building for a week. So you can really get into the festival frenzy. Or get confused.) See Theater/Events for details.

Nice things happen to TRU friends. LOTS OF THINGS HAPPENING WITH TRU VOICES FINALISTS! Let's start with 2002 musical finalist Sugar Dumpling, by TRU Vice-President Cheryl Davis and TRU member and friend C. Colby Sachs (we call him Chuck). They were invited into the Theatre Building Chicago’s 30th anniversary season presentation of  Stages - A Festival Of New Musicals. If you're in Chicago, the festival runs August 11-13, with Cheryl and Chuck on at 9:00am on 8/12 and 1pm on 8/13. They're in good company, including a new work by the legendary Charles Strouse (Annie, Bye Bye Birdie). And there's also a piece conceived by our good friend Donna Trinkoff at Amas, book by TRU member Marsha Lee Sheiness, lyrics Luis Santeiro, June Siegel, Greer Woodward, and music by Rick Cummins.

William Donnelly, whose clever and contemporary Apocalypso was a highlight of last year's TRU series, has a new play opening in the Midtown International Theatre Festival. Called Remuda, this story of a two reclusive brothers is being produced by TRU friend Katherine Heberling. Bill has a unique, quirky and disturbing voice and is an important talent, so do yourself a favor and catch this one.... Also in the Midtown Festival: Motion and Location, a TRU VOICES play finalist from 2003 by Lorna Littleway. This insightful, warm and human comedy about an African American teen's choice between sports and academics, is being directed by the incomparable Sue Lawless, one of the best directors of comedy I have ever known. And a TRU Advisory Board member. (Okay, so I'm a little biased.) Nice TRU story: when Lorna first interviewed with us when her play was being considered for our series, I asked her who her dream director would be. She immediately responded "Sue Lawless," and luckily enough I was able to make the call and make the match. It doesn't always happen that easily.... I can't mention Midtown Festival without adding that TRU member Monica Bauer has her play The Maternal Instinct running. Okay, I may have mentioned it in a previous issue, but it's worth mentioning again. Especially since I designed Monica's website. Check it out at www.thematernalinstinct.org and let me know how you like it.... More Midtown news: Tony Sportiello, who produced Jennifer Fell Hayes' Endurance in the 2004 TRU VOICES play series, is producing the edgy LOL in MITF. It's about a man who stalks a lesbian and bi- chat room pretending to be a woman... and how his alter-ego takes him over. Festival begins July 17th for three weeks, and if I ask John Chatterton nicely, I'll bet he'll give TRU friends a discount to any of the 42 shows. Code TRU6 will get you $18 tickets for $15. (I previously said TRU15, but the code is officially set as TRU6 now.)

Connecticut attorney Rob Schatz was just voted onto the TRU Board of Directors. We first met him at the Daniel Marshall Award luncheon in November, and we're happy to officially have his legal expertise and enthusiasm on board, so to speak.... TRU Advisory Board member Margot Astrachan produced the successful NEO Benefit Concerts at The York Theater this month. She is also producing monthly events at the National Arts Club for the St. George’s Society. This ongoing series is generally hosted by Broadway star Jim Dale. Look forward to a new series of very special evebings in the fall!

Hey, we've even got friends in other states: TRU writer Stacy Glen is having a new swing tune of his, "I Love the Fourth of July," featured in a comic sketch entitled American Patriot, written by Pam Monk. It's in the 4th Fest at Beaver Stadium, just East of the Bryce Jordan Center. Which I gather is somewhere in Pennsylvania, unless Stacy writes and corrects me. His songs will also be part of the 6th annual Wordstock Singer-Songwriter Showcase Nights during Arts Festival week, with Stacy getting the Saturday night slot, July 15th.... Before going into theater, TRU Nashville pal Jaz Dorsey was going to be a librarian. Books are still his passion, almost as much as getting bookings. At a time when the theater community is expanding in Nashville and more and more diverse projects are coming to the stage, he decided it would be of value to have a theater archive in their public library. The Nashville public library has a beautiful division called the Nashville Room, and Jaz approached the director with the idea of the archive. At that time her department had just mounted an exhibit called Curtain Call which included documents and photographs from Nashville's performing arts past; but there was very little material from the contemporary scene. Aimee took his idea to the adminstration of the library and it was aproved. So now he hopes Nashville theater companies will begin submitting documentation of their pasts and their devlopment. Jaz wants the rest of you to know: "Libraries are there to help preserve community history. If your local library does not have a performing arts archive and you are interested in seeing the history of the theater in your commmunity preserved, just go down and suggest that they start one. It's important for all of us to put our work in historical perspective."

Keep sending us your networking requests: that script, actor, prop or partner you're needing, an apartment you're subletting or whatever. How about some networking success stories that could inspire others? We also use this as a means of getting the word out about special free or reduced price events for members of this list.

Did you rent that apartment? Did you find a stage manager? Have you closed up shop and gone back home? If we are running an item that is no longer valid or timely, please let us know. Our mind-reading skills are a little rusty. Thanks!

Most offers are free or discounted to paid members of Theater Resources Unlimited. To join TRU and take advantage of these special deals, contact us at TRUnltd@aol.com. Membership dues are now $50/yr (individual), $75/yr (group)! These postings are done as a free service for TRU members. Non-members may post their services for $10 for 2 weeks, or $25 if you'd like your posting to run for 2 weeks and then be moved to the Online Newsletter and remain for 6 months. Send your listing and a check to: Theater Resources Unlimited, 309 W. 104th Street - 1D, NYC NY 10025. Any questions? Any links not working? Let us know. Email us at TRUnltd@aol.com or call 212.714.7628.

Sorry, ongoing listings are no longer "in perpetuity".
If your item has disappeared, and you want to keep running it, please send it to me again. If you're not a paid TRU member, do consider sending a few bucks for the listing — we can use the financial support. We would appreciate $5 for a one week posting, $10 for a two week posting, or $25 for ongoing posting here and in the website newsletter.

My name is Clay Cockrell with J City Theater in Jersey City and I just wanted to thank you for an incredibly inspiring and informative meeting on Tuesday night ["The Razing and Raising of Off-Off-Broadway"].  I got great ideas. ~ Clay

I just wanted to send you a note to say thank you for hooking Marjorie Suvalle and me up with photographer Ellis Gaskell.  He is fantastic!  We got the most wonderful shots for our Midtown Festival show Pie-Obsessed Drunken Fatties.  He has a terrific eye and really helped us with an interesting concept. We were kind of clueless as to what we wanted and Ellis had the greatest ideas and then he let us play and we came up with even more  ideas.  He was so generous with his time and the price couldn't be beat that's for sure.  So again, thank you.  In fact my husband and I are both going to go to Ellis for our new headshots. ~Julie Perkins

We're reviewing the guidelines and application right now. But submissions will open this week for the TRU Voices New Musicals Reading Series.
Producers are encouraged to submit new works; writers without producers, if you make it to finals, we will try to find you a producer. To nurture the relationships between producers and new musical works, we underwrite the costs of a developmental reading. Seeking mainstream commercial works, as well as non-traditional. As always, we encourage multi-cultural submissions. Submission deadline will be 8/30/06, readings will take place in early December followed by industry panel. Check our home page for updates: www.truonline.org

Our friends at Back Stage want you to submit articles to their new "Talk Back" column. Why are you giving them the silent treatment?
Don't you have something provocative or informative or unusual to say about this business we're in? They really, really want to hear from people in the industry who have some issue or idea that they feel strongly about. The column is about 650 words, and they will pay an honorarium if your article is selected for publication. When you're ready to Talk Back, email your column to Managing Editor David Sheward at: DSheward@backstage.com

ONGOING! TRU PRODUCER MENTORING PROGRAM!

Questions may be sent here to TRUnltd@aol.com

STILL NEED WRITERS FOR THE TRU NEWSLETTER!
Do you have an idea for an interesting article or interview? Would you like to write for the TRU print newsletter, the TRU Voice?
We would like to have a pool of writers available to call upon for articles on an ongoing basis. Our particular thrust, as always, is the needs and interests of producers and theater companies, as opposed to individual artists. However, if you have an idea for a 500-1000 word article that you'd like to write for us, email Bob at TRUnltd@aol.com and we can discuss it. We are always happy to have someone cover our monthly panels, as well. The TRU Voice goes out to about 2000 readers every other month, and it is distinctly different in content from the TRU Update, our online newsletter.

Even if you would simply like to be an extra hand at an event or if you are an amazing cookie maker (who knows- maybe we'll have a bakesale), we would love to have you as an asset to our cooperative. So if you would like to volunteer or just be in the conversation, sign up for the yahoo group by clicking on this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ArT_cOoP - You will be informed of upcoming meetings in which you can attend any, all or few. 10-MINUTE MONOLOGUES IN IOWA!
Riverside Theatre invites playwrights to submit monologues for performance in Walking the Wire: Monologues at Riverside.
This eighth annual evening of original work features 10-minute monologues by both established and up-and-coming playwrights. Submissions are due Tuesday, 8/15; final selections will be announced by 8/25. The monologues will be performed 9/22-24 at Riverside Theatre. Submission Guidelines: Up to two submissions per author of original, unpublished monologues (may be dramatic character or personal memoir) under ten minutes length. The copy must be easy to read: double spaced in a minimum 12pt. font, and should include the playwright's name, mailing address, email address, and phone number. Simple is best. Since "Walking the Wire" typically includes a large number of monologues, it is important that each one require as little production as possible; set-pieces, props, or effects needing set-up, strike, or special technical support may disqualify an otherwise excellent submission. Monologues will be independently rehearsed until the week of the performance when the show will rehearse at Riverside Theatre.  Area playwrights may indicate an interest in performing their own work, or include the name of an actor interested in performing the monologue, although neither is required. Submissions should be mailed to: Attn: Jody Hovland, Artistic Director, Riverside Theatre, 213 N. Gilbert Street, Iowa City, IA 52245. For more information, contact Rachelle Saunders, Marketing Director, at 319-887-1360, marketing@riversidetheatre.org.

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4,
not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle,
but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.
You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.

The Set Recycling Hot-line lets you give away your set pieces to a show that needs them, or get the pieces you need. It works like this: a show is closing, and needs to get rid of its set. Rather than throw it out, they can give it to you. Or you need some specific set pieces, and you want to find out if anyone out there has them. Of course, none of this works unless you plan well in advance and list your offers/needs at least a month ahead of time. It's a matter of timing. And all the carting is up to you - there's no handy trucking service connected with this. For more info, or to start using the service, call Julia Rubin at 212.673.6343. Please mention TRU!

- TRU WORD OF MOUTH -
There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about
and that is not being talked about.

~Oscar Wilde

NEW:

Caught the last performance of Jayson with a Y, produced by the New Group (naked). It's a tough play dealing with a tough subject: a teen with a form of autism, and what to do with him when his mother unexpectedly dies. Jayson's two aunts want to honor their sister's wishes, but they have equally strong reasons not to take on the care of a boy with special needs and fits of anger: one is pregnant, the other set to move to Paris. The scenes with Jayson are engaging to the point of being absolutely riveting, due in no small part to the remarkable performance of 16-year-old Miles Purinton. His mastery of the quirks and tics of this disturbed boy are compelling, and one can never quite anticipate where each scene will lead, which makes for gripping theater. The relationships between the sisters and their often needy husbands feel a bit more like familiar territory, and a conveniently dramatic turnaround by the sister who ultimately decides to take Jayson, felt unearned and unconvincing. However, the play is intelligently crafted and never lost my interest. I imagine with some fine-tuning, it may come back in better shape. If it does, don't shy away from Jayson – take the challenge and learn to love him. Much like his aunt does. ~Bob

Greg Kotis sure loves his bodily fluids. There was fabulous Urinetown, of course. And now Pig Farm at Roundabout offers up heaps of what is quaintly referred to as "defecatory sludge" as well as a stage full of blood and mud. And yet, it's a comedy. Kotis has a quirky sensibility, no doubt, and it is surprising how much the tone of Pig Farm resembles Urinetown. One almost expects the characters to break into sardonic song now and then, and it might liven things up if they did. The play seems to be a send-up of the Martin McDonagh blood-fests (Lieutenant of Inishmore, etc.), as set in Sam Shepard country, and would be a lot more fun if it all happened a lot more quickly. John Rando has directed again, and shows his mastery of comic precision and slapdash slapstick. It didn't all work for me, to be honest, but it has its moments and a particularly hard-working cast that gets down and dirty in all senses of the phrase. ~Bob

From Nashville: If you're a history buff or love a good spoof, a fan of Monty Python or Saturday Night Live, you won't want to miss Street Theatre Company's production of THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF AMERICA (ABRIDGED). From the writers who brought us THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED) this piece follows a similar format, with three actors racing through 50 thousand years of American History in two hours, beginning with the arrival of the first humans on the North American continent and bouncing from there through everything from the first explorers to hurricane Katrina. More than anythig THE COMPLETE HISTORY etc. is a zany vaudeville with more silliness than satire but still with plenty of bite, most of it tempered with whimsy and contemporary references (Betsy Ross and her sister Diana, for instance.)

The entire history of our country is managed by three engaging and energetic actors - Chris Camp, John Holley and David Williams. Tall and lanky, Campbell almost functions as the MC of the piece. At one point he gives us a very bizarre Benjamin Franklin arriving at the opening passage of The Bill of Rights ( which is immeadiately countered with "The Bill of Wrongs") He also serves as our tour guide through the second half of the twentieth century in the character of film noir detective Spade Diamond, who is forced to grapple with the evil machinations of the diabolical "Conspirator Man" (played by Williams.) Williams is an apt comedian with a beautiful voice which he gets to show off when singing his version of The Star Spangled Banner. He also delivers on the money impersanations of Nixon and Regan and has a couple of delightful moments of giddy physical comedy which provoked a ripple of giggles from all the kids in the audience. Holley, who gets pegged with many of the female characters, has an amazing face which metamorphs from handsome good looks to grotesquerie at the drop of a hat - or, more accurately, the addition of a hat (or wig). All three fellows have compelling smiles which they flash regularly to keep the mood of the evening grounded in light hearted good humor. The spirit of the script is effectivly captured by director Cathy Street and efficiently managed by her stage manager Anne-Geri' Fann.

The production values are minimal - a bare stage with a backdrop of the original Amerian flag. Movement through the eras is conveyed through a barrage of props and costume pieces. All of this takes place on the stage of East Academy, a private school in East Nashville which, happily, also makes it's facility available as a performance venue for smaller Nashville theater companies. Street Theatre Compny itself is ony a couple of years old. Founded by Cathy and JJ Street, it is one of Nashville's emerging theater companies, with a mission of fostering theatere, music and arts education in Nashville. This production runs for two more weekends and is definitley worth the trip to East Nashville. For those who want to make a full evening of it the theatre is located directly behind The Rosepepper Cantina on Eastland where you can enjoy a great meal while waiting for the theater doors to open or after the performance. ~Jaz Dorsey

PREVIOUS:

Went to the Shakespeare Festival in Canada. The high point was a production of the Dion Boucicault farce London Assurance, directed with consistent comic flair by Brian Bedford, who managed to elicit laughs from every cast member, including scene-stealing turns by a secondary character, the hen-pecked husband of the naughtily named Lady Gay Spanker. He also starred as the preening over-the-hill roue with delusions of sexual prowess, and gave one of the most shameless comic performances I've ever laughed myself to tears at. Gorgeous, opulent sets and costumes, too.

Bali H'ai called us to a competent and thoroughly engaging production of South Pacific at the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford Canada. It was all framed in bamboo in an often successful effort to achieve a more authentic Polynesian flavor than usual. And I was reminded of why this Pulitzer Prize winner holds a place of honor in musical history. While some may feel the story of miscegenation and bigotry is handled a bit too patly by today's standards, and therefore a little dated, sabotaged a bit by Hammerstein's innate sentimentality; it nevertheless holds up as a noble effort, and an exquisite marriage of music and drama that soars again and again to emotional heights. If Some Enchanted Evening be a chestnut, then such chestnuts I will gratefully devour forever to feed my soul. This Nearly Was Mine captures and communicates DeBecque's broken heart in phrases so lush and passionate, they connect us all to the Universal experience of loss. And anyone who hasn't had a love that made them feel Younger Than Springtime can savor the aching sweetness vicariously through Cable's sensual moments with Liat. Old-fashioned? Well, there is nothing old-fashioned about the skill with which scenes build to and burst into song. Maybe Nellie's washing that man out of her hair has lost a little zing, especially with an actress in the role who barely gets her hair wet. And Honey Bun is a foolish bit of filler in a comparatively sparse second act. But I'm in Love, I'm in Love, I'm in Love with this wonderful show! And the Canadians did a respectable job, with star Cynthia Dale offering a believable Arkansas twang as a rueful and conflicted Nellie and Theodore Baerg offering a rich, satisfying operatic baritone as Emile.

Then there was Oliver!, a lumpy gruel of a musical with a lovely score that familiarity has aged in treacle. Songs are poorly set up, and the slapdash action of the Dickens story was, at least in this production, ultimately defeated by the unforgiving exposure of a thrust stage. Once again I am reminded that a good musical requires a solid book, although this is a rare instance in which a wildly popular collection of songs has buoyed a slim show on a wave of success through the years. Canadian star Colm Feore was cast as Fagin (he was a terrific Cassius here in the Denzel Washington Julius Caesar), and although he did a skillful job, the production seemed to put undue star-turn emphasis on his character, throwing much of the story out of balance. And gosh golly he was a sympathetic villain.

Okay, it was the Shakespeare Festival, so we did deign to catch one of Willie's little scrawls, a handsome and lucid production of Much Ado About Nothing. Beatrice and Benedick were superbly, charismatically and delightfully enacted by Lucy Peacock and Peter Donaldson, and the entire cast delivered those juicy iambs with absolute clarity. Admittedly there were some weak spots, with a Canadian flatness creeping in here and there to undermine the Elizabethan grace, but overall a fine job. Did you know Shakespeare is actually very funny?

Last and least was an ambitious attempt at making sense of the Jacobean gore-fest known as The Duchess of Malfi. Astonishing to see the contrast in acting of Much Ado's Lucy Peacock playing a tortured, tormented and dignified Duchess. But too much was made of murky lighting effects, shadows and silhouettes that cast a soporific pall over the whole bloody affair. ~ Bob

Saw a preview of [The Drowsy Chaperone], this marvelous new original Broadway musical... which as we all know, was already a Huge Hit in Los Angeles. I think it is by far the MOST FUN I have ever had in the theater and damn I have seen a lot of Musicals in the last 35 years. I laughed more than I have ever laughed in a Theatre. Every Song is a showstopper. Every performance is SUPERB! And what an amazing, original, well-written Book! I cannot wait to see this show again. IT IS INFECTIOUS. You have all gotta go see it. If the critics do not say WONDERFUL THINGS then there is No Musical Comedy God!!!! By Far My FAVORITE MUSICAL, Now and FOREVER!!!! ~Jack Dyville [editor's note: the musical comedy gods were indeed kind: Drowsy Chaperone garnered 13 Tony nominations, including Best Musical]

I'll add my endorsement of The Drowsy Chaperone (in case 13 Tony nominations isn't enough to get you there). It is an hysterically funny, thoroughly winning excursion into pure foolishness. Yet for a souffle, it has surprising substance. See it for the silliness, of course; but come away with a deep respect for the nobility of the musical comedy, an essential form of cultural escapism that serves to keep so many of us sane in this often unmusical, uncomic world.

And don't hesitate to walk down the aisle and say "I do" to The Wedding Singer. Possibly modeled after the non-stop energy of Hairspray, this is a well-crafted piece with a few flaws (the central character's want isn't as clear or as compelling as Hairspray's Tracy Turnblad's) but it possesses enough charm and humor to more than make up for them. I'm not an Adam Sandler fan, but I enjoyed this. It's sweeter and less smart-alecky than you might expect. It truly wooed and won me. ~Bob

"I saw The Drowsy Chaperone last Friday, and it was absolutely delightful. How refreshing to have a completely original show on Broadway - no tired revivals or bad pop songs here. The action centers around a man in his apartment, sharing a record of his favorite 1920's musical. He speaks directly to the audience, and the musical comes to life right there in his apartment. His commentary on the action made me laugh hysterically! The actors were so energetic, and their comedic timing could not have been better. I left with a huge smile on my face. This is how Broadway should be!  ~Amanda Garry

"Tonite I saw the first performance of The Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway. This is a show you will not want to miss. The performances are brilliant, costumes and sets perfect and inventive. I laughed my ass off and then was ultimately so moved by the tale it tells of one man's love for performance and the musical genre. The direction is tight as a drum and not one moment squeaks.Well,I've said enough. Now get your tickets  before it formally opens..I guarantee you'll grin and dance all the way home. Happy Theatregoing." ~ Joe Brancato
