* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * “Why should I be concerned with the plight of small theater owners? I am the author of four plays, yet to date not one theater owner or producer has accepted any one of my plays for even a reading.” This was the disturbing email I recently received from a disgruntled TRU playwright. I hope he was being tongue-in-cheek. If he was, his tongue was in danger of bludgeoning said cheek because he wrote me in an emphatic 18-point boldface type. Ouch! I’m sure he’s just venting his frustrations, but it brings up some very important points about community that are at the heart of what TRU stands for. Indeed, why should any of us be interested in the plight of anyone else that isn’t directly helping us fulfill our dreams? Why shouldn’t we scorn and dismiss others in the same way they seem to scorn and dismiss us? I don’t consider this as simple a question as the parallel rhetoric might indicate. On the simplest level, this good playwright is forgetting that TRU was created to help people in the business of the arts, with an emphasis on producers. We are not an artists’ organization. The reason for writers and actors and directors to even bother with us is two-fold: first, so many artists are forced to self-produce if they want anything to register on the radar screens of their careers; and second, it is simply healthy for anyone in a business to understand that business. (It also doesn’t hurt for them to meet and network with the people who are controlling the purse strings, frayed as those strings may be.) Look, I’m primarily a playwright and song writer, but I realized about 15 years ago that acting the “helpless artist” wasn’t really helping my career. So I learned to care about “the plight of small theater owners,” and producers and general managers and artistic directors, because these are the people that form the foundation of the business upon which I depend. And so I curate seasons of panels about theater real estate and contracts and running a theater company. And I submit my work, and wait for my break. Like everyone else. But while I’m waiting, at least I feel like I am contributing to the community. It’s not as lonely this way. I know in my bones there are many people who carve out success by pursuing their goals single-mindedly, and with little regard for the needs of those around them. Starlets still claw their way to the top, Sammys continue to run, and Ayn Rand rules for many. We all make our choices, and a lot of those guys (and gals) are a lot wealthier than I am, and probably better known. It’s just not in my nature. To be honest, my disgruntled playwright isn’t saying anything that I haven’t thought myself during the countless moments of rejection that pepper my life, and threaten to harden into a crust. I’ve managed not to harden, so I have no idea if I’d be better off that way. I don’t think I’d be happier, but in the fuzzy realm of conjecture, who knows? And why would I, as a playwright, be interested in companies that produce revivals and classics? To start with, by far the majority of work produced outside of Broadway is new work, with classics and revivals being just a small niche for a few companies. (Let’s leave Broadway to another discussion, and the constant uphill battle to find an audience for new work in the commercial theater.) But even if the whole city went revival-crazy, I would have no more right to tell people not to produce work that sparked their passion than they would to tell me what I should write. Ultimately, I think it is essential for us to be interested in what others do; otherwise, what right have we to expect them to be interested in what we do? I guess I care about the plight of everyone within the scope of my world because I suspect they are all reflections of myself in one way or another. I care about small theater owners, and big ones too, and great plays new and revived, and noble efforts by those who aspire. I care about struggling Broadway shows, ambitious actors who stop at nothing and naïve hopefuls who believe in everything. And right now, I care very much about frustrated playwrights who feel neglected and overlooked. And according to the laws of Karma, I can rest peacefully knowing that others will care about me. Footnote: In the past few weeks, someone has stepped up to underwrite the TRU Musicals Series, someone else has offered expert guidance with our fundraising, a foundation has come through with a substantial grant, a generous TRU member donated $1000 and many others have been sending us $25 to $100. So maybe there's something to be said for Karma. Highlights of the week. Sherry Eaker of BackStage has joined us in producing the next TRU panel, "I Produce Dead People...The Challenges of Bringing the Classics to Life". Schulman's up-coming book AIN'T SHOW BUSINESS GRAND appears in the Summer '06 issue of Show People Magazine (a Time Inc. publication) which is on newsstands now. The chapter deals with the ill-fated Broadway production of Arnold Wesker's The Merchant which killed Zero Mostel. (If you don't know what happened, guess you'll have to pick up Show People and read the excerpt!) They call Lisa Lampanelli "Comedy's Lovable Queen of Mean." We call her a good friend. June found her roasting Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange and living legend Jerry Lewis ALL IN ONE WEEK! The rest of the summer will be just as eventful. In July, Lisa will shoot a movie with her Blue Collar buddies Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy. (Don't worry - it's not a porn! It's Delta Farce, a comedy in which Lisa will once again class up the screen, this time playing Bill Engvall's trailer trash wife). Then in August, William Shatner better watch his ass when Lisa aims her Tazer at him during a Comedy Central Roast of the still Enterprising entertainer. Lisa will ream Captain Kirk, along with his Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy, Seinfeld alum Jason Alexander, Andy Dick, Jimmy Kimmel, Ben Stiller and many more. The roast will debut on the comedy channel Sunday, August 20, at 10 pm. More TRU news from the Midtown International Theatre Festival: long-standing TRU member and friend Lou Rodgers of Golden Fleece Ltd. (she's been with TRU since 1995!), is offering her solo piece The Wake of the Essex for just two performances (and one of them is tomorrow 7/17). It's the true and grizzly story that inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick, and it stars TRU member Robert Manzari.... Former TRU member Rob Florence lives in New Orleans. And survived the devastation of Katrina. He's in New York for the Midtown Festival to tell 8 true, harrowing (and surprisingy humorous at times - hey, you gotta laugh or go crazy, right?) stories of survival in Fleeing Katrina.... TRU actress member Lisa Barri is bringing her Invisible Child back to the festival after a successful run last year. It's a unique solo show about a woman torn between her dream and her mother's approval, with three dancers offering choreographed commentary. Did I mention that Saint Heaven (produced by TRU team Van Dean and Hillary Cutter) was scouted by Kris Stewart and NYMF in last year's Musicals Series, and invited into this year's NYMF (New York Musical Theater Festival)? Saint Heaven is passing having spent enough money already on a production in Connecticut (and with some possibilities on the horizon, to be announced), but NYMF will be scouting next year's shows from our series, as well.... Okay, I know I told you that 2002 musical finalist Sugar Dumpling, by TRU Veep Cheryl Davis and TRU member and friend C. Colby Sachs is in the Theatre Building Chicago’s 30th anniversary season presentation of Stages - A Festival Of New Musicals. And that the Midtown International Theater Festival is rife with TRU Voices alumnae: William Donnelly, whose Apocalypso was a highlight of last year's TRU series, has Remuda... there's Motion and Location, a TRU VOICES play finalist from 2003 by Lorna Littleway, still directed by the TRU Advisory Board member Sue Lawless.... TRU Voices Honorary Mention writer Monica Bauer has her play The Maternal Instinct running.... And Tony Sportiello, who produced Jennifer Fell Hayes' Endurance in the 2004 TRU VOICES play series, is producing the edgy LOL. Now it's definite: TRU friends get a discount to any of the 42 shows in the festival: Code TRU6 will get you $18 tickets for $15. This is one of the only discounts the festival gives, and it's only because I am the Marketing Director. So there. TRU member Susan Neuffer admits she's being very bad this summer. Despite her better judgment, she will be appearing in two slightly outrageous original musicals in the East Village in The International Cringe Festival...."BEST OF FEST" (Naughty Bits from the Bad Musicals Festival) at NY Artists Unlimited. It's produced by TRU friend Melba LaRose. Catch Susan as as Babs (An Oak Tree, mother of Georgie Boy, a "Bush") in The Sound of Wizards, AND as internet dating nerd Leonard's nagging Mom in Love.com.... And sing out the news: one of our nearly original TRU members, Lisa Gold (yes, THAT Lisa Gold, all you actors out there) is joining current TRU member Donna Moore as a guest singer in Donna's show The Unbalancing Act. Thursday, July 20th @ 8:30pm and Wednesday, July 26th @ 9:00pm at Don't Tell Mama's Cabaret, 343 W. 46th Street. Call Lisa to reserve: 917.804.7448. And say you're a TRU friend! We are pleased and honored by the success of the TRU Producer Mentoring Program, and maybe should catch you up. Some amazing top professionals are generously offering their time and knowledge for the program. First and foremost, dear friend and supporter Cheryl Wiesenfeld must be acknowledged for her tireless efforts helping Van Hill Entertainment in their presentation of Saint Heaven, both in the 2005 TRU Voices and in subsequently moving it into a full production at the Stamford Center for the Arts. Jennifer Costello, Vice-President of Live Nation Entertainment, productively mentored TRU's Laura Stuart for our first three-month term; Jill Mendelsohn interned for and was mentored by producer Randall Wreghitt while he was bring the Lieutenant of Inishmore to Broadway; Dan Markley (Shockheaded Peter, Damn Yankees) and Woodie King Jr. (New Federal Theater) who continue to offer their time and input to TRU's Joanes Prosper. And entertainment attorney Don Farber is conducting roundtables for all of your "mentees." Our program director (and former "mentee") Jill Mendelsohn is currently making matches with an impressive roster of Mentors who are eager to nurture and mold aspiring producers. They include Lauren Mitchell of Dodger Theatricals, Anita Waxman (Bombay Dreams, Top Dog/Under Dog), Michael Alden (Bridge & Tunnel, Bat Boy) and Donna Trinkoff of Amas. The truest of TRU friends, every one. Dear TRU - What can I say about those lovely continuing bursts of support from the TRU Update? Many thanks! I came here from Boston just one year ago this month, having left a safe job as a college professor in my forties to follow a very old dream, and here I am, a playwright in her early fifties, getting produced! It's all because of friends like you, who've given me good advice and support. ~
Grateful Playwright, Thank you so much for an insightful and helpful seminar ["The Razing & Raising of Off-Off-Broadway"]. I was so happy to finally meet you after using your website as such an amazing resource. - Katie Rosin, publicist I participated at the TRU Auditions in March. I was not able to get a slot because there were already so many TRU members who applied. But you called and asked if I wanted to be an alternate for the auditions for the next day. So I was able to get a slot and I just wanted to say thanks again for the opportunity. I'm STILL receiving offers to audition for various companies and projects. I will definitely try to do the event again next year. ~Robin LeMon Click here to return to top of page |

To nurture the relationships between producers and new musical works, we underwrite the costs of a developmental reading. Seeking mainstream commercial works, as well as non-traditional. As always, we encourage multi-cultural submissions. Submission deadline will be 8/30/06, readings will take place in early December followed by industry panel. NEW! CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS: BLACKNESS/DIASPORA!
This issue of Performance Research aims to commence a dialogue on the performance of Blackness/ Diaspora. What does it mean to 'perform' blackness? How might performance be the link in the African Diaspora? The Editor invites academics and practitioners from a variety of fields to propose conventional academic papers, as well as interviews, documents, performative writings, performance ethnographies, critical reviews of performances, and collaborations between artists and academics. One concept of Diaspora has to do with scattering and dispersions. This issue will consider the return of bodies to localities, cityscapes and homelands to ponder performances of memory, trauma, and desire - revisiting hauntologies of colonialism, post-colonialism, and even modernity. This issue will also consider the hemispheric modalities of blackness, in addition to the transatlantic flow of bodies of thought and performances. Proposals due 9/15/06. ALL proposals, submissions and general enquiries should be sent direct to: Linden Elmhirst - Administrative Assistant, Performance Research, Dartington College of Arts, Totnes, Devon TQ9 6EJ UK. Email: performance-research@dartington.ac.uk Content specific enquires should be directed to Myron Beasley at: performbrazil@rcn.com For complete Guidelines:

GALATEA SEEKS COMPOSER/LYRICIST!
Looking to collaborate with a Composer/Lyricist on a modern day musical set in an urban environment, which takes place in the present time and day. Sound can be eclectic to reflect today's trends. Bella Galatea is the passionate tale of two men's search to find the perfect woman and the lengths they will go in order to create her. Galatea, their statue, comes alive, but is not content just being their beautiful muse. She sets out on her own and becomes besotted by G. a fun-loving youngster. Through her travels, Galatea's path crosses with a woman named Cerelia who is the opposite of Galetea -- she obsesses about her own physical imperfections and stops at nothing to achieve her version of perfection. When everybody's desires collide the end result is a combustive comedy. Contact: Katrin Hilbe at KHilbe@aol.com
10-MINUTE MONOLOGUES IN IOWA!
Riverside Theatre invites playwrights to submit monologues for performance in Walking the Wire: Monologues at Riverside. This eighth annual evening of original work features 10-minute monologues by both established and up-and-coming playwrights. Submissions are due Tuesday, 8/15; final selections will be announced by 8/25. Guidelines: Up to two submissions per author of original, unpublished monologues (may be dramatic character or personal memoir) under ten minutes length. The copy must be easy to read: double spaced in a minimum 12pt. font, and should include the playwright's name, mailing address, email address, and phone number. Simple is best. It is important that each monologue require as little production as possible; set-pieces, props, or effects needing set-up, strike, or special technical support may disqualify an otherwise excellent submission. Area playwrights may indicate an interest in performing their own work, or include the name of an actor interested in performing, although neither is required. Submissions should be mailed to: Attn: Jody Hovland, Artistic Director, Riverside Theatre, 213 N. Gilbert Street, Iowa City, IA 52245. For more information, contact Rachelle Saunders, Marketing Director, at 319-887-1360, marketing@riversidetheatre.org.

GOT A SET TO BREAK DOWN? NEED A SET TO PUT UP?
The Set Recycling Hot-line lets you give away your set pieces to a show that needs them, or get the pieces you need. It works like this: a show is closing, and needs to get rid of its set. Rather than throw it out, they can give it to you. Or you need some specific set pieces, and you want to find out if anyone out there has them. Of course, none of this works unless you plan well in advance and list your offers/needs at least a month ahead of time. It's a matter of timing. And all the carting is up to you - there's no handy trucking service connected with this. For more info, or to start using the service, call Julia Rubin at 212.673.6343. Please mention TRU!

Tiara is 23 and currently subletting from a friend in W. Harlem who is returning in August. Location desired is Manhattan or app. 20 min. commute into the city (midtown) via MTA subway, no Jersey locales please. A few blocks from the subway is also desired, being that my work forces late work hours. A month-to-month would be most desirable, to make sure we workout, but I do plan to stay here for at least a year if not more. I require a private bedroom, with a door please. Furnished is desired, but un-furnished is good too. I'm a performer, currently working wardrobe for a well-known off-broadway theatre company and doing web-work for a NYC Theatre producing network. I'm nice, easy going, and clean. Sharing commons areas ie: kitchen, bathroom, living room is great. The absolute maximum: $900/month. Any leads, email Tiarayong@hotmail.com

TRU WORD OF MOUTH

I don't care what anybody says about me as long as it isn't true.
~ Dorothy Parker
I always think that the best way to know God is to love many things.
~ Vincent Van Gogh
NEW:
Lou Rodgers piece "Wake of the Essex" at Midtown International Theatre Festival is fabulous. Beautifully written and performed. ~Julie Halpern
Actually went [to see DruidSynge at Lincoln Center - the 8-hour presentation of the complete theatrical works of John Millington Synge]. There are lots of intermissions. What a dismal despairing life those people had. But they're fighters. Production is more than worthwhile. Direction, brilliant. Performances, superb. As are sets and costumes and lighting. One thing about the theatre is that it has horrendous accoustics. Those combined with a thick brogue made it difficult to understand everything that was said, but oddly enough, it didn't matter. ~Elena
I got invited to see Hot Feet last night, not a show that was at the top of my list. But I'm glad I went. It has one of the hardest-working casts in town, dancing non-stop through a fast-paced evening. It's also one of the best-looking casts around, male and female. Lead Vivian Nixon is lovely as Kalimba, the teen for whom dancing is as essentiasl as life itself. She dances like a dream; I was particularly impressed with a graceful and expressive pas de deux that ends Act One. It's also good to see Maurice Hines working so creatively to incorporate contemporary dance styles like break and hip-hop into the traditional mainstream musical. His patterns are impressive, his imagination formidable. His and the show's weakness is in the storytelling. I didn't get the slam-bang flashy opening number at all, and the show only began to work for me with the introduction of a charming little girl named Emma who dreams of being a dancer, and is tempted by a devil figure with those alluring red shoes. And proceeds to tell her the cautionary story of Kalimba, who also coveted those shoes. (Yes, Hot Feet is a contemporary reimagining of the classic Red Shoes, if you didn't know.) So is it Emma's story? Is it Kalimba's story? The plot veers in and out, and is at times confusing. I had to pull out the Red Shoes video and watch it tonight to clarify some of the plot points for myself. I also had a problem with the careless way the Earth Wind and Fire score was integrated into the show. Most of the songs are sung off-stage as commentary while dancers dance; only a handful of songs are sung by characters (two by the Tony-winner Ann Duquesny as the central character's mom), so the effect is ultimately less of an integrated musical than a Vegas revue. Still, the audience around me was wildly enthusiastic, screaming and cheering and yappin' at the stage like it was their best friend. And yes, the crowd gave it a standing ovation. Although I didn't join them, I was happy to see so many people take this struggling show to their hearts. ~Bob
PREVIOUS:
Caught the last performance of Jayson with a Y, produced by the New Group (naked). It's a tough play dealing with a tough subject: a teen with a form of autism, and what to do with him when his mother unexpectedly dies. Jayson's two aunts want to honor their sister's wishes, but they have equally strong reasons not to take on the care of a boy with special needs and fits of anger: one is pregnant, the other set to move to Paris. The scenes with Jayson are engaging to the point of being absolutely riveting, due in no small part to the remarkable performance of 16-year-old Miles Purinton. His mastery of the quirks and tics of this disturbed boy are compelling, and one can never quite anticipate where each scene will lead, which makes for gripping theater. The relationships between the sisters and their often needy husbands feel a bit more like familiar territory, and a conveniently dramatic turnaround by the sister who ultimately decides to take Jayson, felt unearned and unconvincing. However, the play is intelligently crafted and never lost my interest. I imagine with some fine-tuning, it may come back in better shape. If it does, don't shy away from Jayson – take the challenge and learn to love him. Much like his aunt does. ~Bob
Greg Kotis sure loves his bodily fluids. There was fabulous Urinetown, of course. And now Pig Farm at Roundabout offers up heaps of what is quaintly referred to as "defecatory sludge" as well as a stage full of blood and mud. And yet, it's a comedy. Kotis has a quirky sensibility, no doubt, and it is surprising how much the tone of Pig Farm resembles Urinetown. One almost expects the characters to break into sardonic song now and then, and it might liven things up if they did. The play seems to be a send-up of the Martin McDonagh blood-fests (Lieutenant of Inishmore, etc.), as set in Sam Shepard country, and would be a lot more fun if it all happened a lot more quickly. John Rando has directed again, and shows his mastery of comic precision and slapdash slapstick. It didn't all work for me, to be honest, but it has its moments and a particularly hard-working cast that gets down and dirty in all senses of the phrase. ~Bob
Saw a preview of [The Drowsy Chaperone], this marvelous new original Broadway musical... which as we all know, was already a Huge Hit in Los Angeles. I think it is by far the MOST FUN I have ever had in the theater and damn I have seen a lot of Musicals in the last 35 years. I laughed more than I have ever laughed in a Theatre. Every Song is a showstopper. Every performance is SUPERB! And what an amazing, original, well-written Book! I cannot wait to see this show again. IT IS INFECTIOUS. You have all gotta go see it. If the critics do not say WONDERFUL THINGS then there is No Musical Comedy God!!!! By Far My FAVORITE MUSICAL, Now and FOREVER!!!! ~Jack Dyville [editor's note: the musical comedy gods were indeed kind: Drowsy Chaperone WON 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical]
I'll add my endorsement of The Drowsy Chaperone (in case 5 Tony Awards isn't enough to get you there). It is an hysterically funny, thoroughly winning excursion into pure foolishness. Yet for a souffle, it has surprising substance. See it for the silliness, of course; but come away with a deep respect for the nobility of the musical comedy, an essential form of cultural escapism that serves to keep so many of us sane in this often unmusical, uncomic world.
And don't hesitate to walk down the aisle and say "I do" to The Wedding Singer. Possibly modeled after the non-stop energy of Hairspray, this is a well-crafted piece with a few flaws (the central character's want isn't as clear or as compelling as Hairspray's Tracy Turnblad's) but it possesses enough charm and humor to more than make up for them. I'm not an Adam Sandler fan, but I enjoyed this. It's sweeter and less smart-alecky than you might expect. It truly wooed and won me. ~Bob
I saw The Drowsy Chaperone last Friday, and it was absolutely delightful. How refreshing to have a completely original show on Broadway - no tired revivals or bad pop songs here. The action centers around a man in his apartment, sharing a record of his favorite 1920's musical. He speaks directly to the audience, and the musical comes to life right there in his apartment. His commentary on the action made me laugh hysterically! The actors were so energetic, and their comedic timing could not have been better. I left with a huge smile on my face. This is how Broadway should be! ~Amanda Garry
Tonite I saw the first performance of The Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway. This is a show you will not want to miss. The performances are brilliant, costumes and sets perfect and inventive. I laughed my ass off and then was ultimately so moved by the tale it tells of one man's love for performance and the musical genre. The direction is tight as a drum and not one moment squeaks.Well,I've said enough. Now get your tickets before it formally opens..I guarantee you'll grin and dance all the way home. Happy Theatregoing. ~ Joe Brancato
