* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * What is the purpose of Fringes and Festivals, other than to breathe life and energy into big cities sagging under the heat of summer? Some would argue that Manhattan is a year-round festival, with a rich abundance of theater of all sizes and shapes running rampant in unexpected nooks and crannies, parks and parking lots, clubs and cabarets as well as a dizzying host of conventional venues. Still, a festival or a fringe ostensibly offers a focused series of works under an identifiable banner, all happening in a defined set of venues and all marketed together. They tend to be affordably priced at the Equity-dictated $18, and oddly scheduled, to seduce audience members into a Festival Frenzy of theater-going. More than anything, they are an “Event” which makes it possible for them to garner more attention than the endless parade of individual productions that are born and die daily in this town. The big daddy of them all is the NY International Fringe Festival, entering its 9th year, with well over 200 offerings each August in dozens of venues. The Fringe has come to be identified with edgy non-mainstream works, although a close examination of the schedule will often reveal much that is classic and conventional, as well as shows that hope to go on to commercial runs. (And Urinetown most famously managed to do just that.) The mother lode for writers is Arielle Tepper’s SPF (Summer Play Festival), which just ended its third season at Theatre Row Theatres. SPF limits its offerings to a mere fifteen or so, and is the only festival I know of that completely pays the costs of the productions it presents. Somewhere in between is Midtown International Theatre Festival, now in its seventh year and final weekend, John Chatterton’s attempt to move the “fringe” to a more convenient location, namely midtown, and to more comfortable, air-conditioned venues. If I had my way as Marketing Consultant, the festival would live up to its name by focusing on “international” product, shows either from or about cultures other than our own. As it is, it is simply a lovingly adjudicated assortment of about 40 shows that have passed muster with John and his artistic directors. Some festivals are better defined in terms of expectations. Dixon Place Hot Festival is in the midst of its 15th annual “celebration of queer culture” in July and August; this one stays put pretty much in Dixon Place’s theater on the Bowery. The Fresh Fruit Festival, in its third year, presented a diversity of Lesbian, Gay and Transgender offerings, though in various venues in July. The American Living Room Series is HERE's August festival of work by emerging artists in a living room environment; usually in HERE’s own space, this summer they’ve moved to Three-Legged Dog because of their own renovations. Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) – in June – is a two-week celebration of urban theatrical expression by a cross-section of playwrights and performing artists with an inclusive, multicultural perspective. And in a mere three years, NYMF (New York Musical Theatre Festival) has managed to carve out a niche as the pre-eminent festival of new musical works for theater, premiering over 30 musicals, with more than 100 concerts and special events at various venues. Why do people choose to produce in festivals and fringes? So they can ride the wave of the “Event” and attract more attention than they might on their own; and yet the irony is that an individual show has to fight just as hard within a festival to distinguish itself from the crowd of other shows in that festival. As Marketing Consultant for MITF, I warn everyone upfront that we will not effectively market their show, and they need to put real time, money and effort into getting their audiences. It also costs less to produce a show in a festival because you are sharing your venue with other shows, and the venue would otherwise be one of the biggest expenses in any production. Also, because of the generally fast turnaround between productions, you are forced to pare down your production values and keep your presentation simple enough to set up and break down in a nerve-wracking fifteen minutes. The down side is that you have less chance of making back your money because you are sharing your box office with the festival, and in some cases (the NY Fringe) giving away royalty points for the future. Given the limitations of time and production values, festivals may be best-suited for small alternative pieces; and yet many shows with greater ambitions and big commercial dreams have used festivals as a developmental step towards the “real production.” Given the restrictions of Equity and budget, it is a rare confluence of circumstances that allows a show to be sufficiently rehearsed to give the feeling of being truly polished and ready for the next step up; more often, we watch them with a forgiving “work-in-progress” attitude, and laud them for the occasional creative use of those ubiquitous black cubes or bright piece of fabric. And just how much can you do with a lighting plot that is designed for a dozen different shows? Getting accepted into one of these festivals is always exciting. But once we come down from the high of acceptance ("they like me, they really like me"), we have to remember that it costs money. Sometimes a lot of money. (Unless you are lucky enough to be adopted by SPF.) But compared to the financial risk of moving too quickly to an off-Broadway run, festivals and fringes are a bargain. They have become the incubator of new works that off- and off-off-Broadway used to be, and a valuable step in the development process. Approached realistically, with modest expectations, and the understanding that you might not make back the bulk of your investment, festivals and fringes are great opportunities. The question always comes down to: can you afford NOT to invest in your career? And do you truly believe that you and your work are worth investing in? For my reviews of LOL, The Wastes of Time, Motion and Location, Pie-Obsessed Drunken Fatties, Sex and Sealing Wax, The Siblings, MentalPause and The Quiet Model in the Midtown International Theatre Festival, go to Word of Mouth. TRU Advisory Board member Pat Addiss is on the Mod Squad these days: she's one of the associate producers of SHOUT! The Mod Musical. Our friend Donna Trinkoff from Amas (and one of our TRU Mentors) gave the show a nice leg up as the presenter in last year's NYMF, and heading the whole thing is TRU friend Victoria Lang of Plus Entertainment. Word is that the special priced previews were practically completely sold out, and in case it needs any more push, the cast performed live on ABC's Good Morning America on Thursday morning, July 27th. I've asked for a special TRU discount to the show; I'll let you know if it comes through. I saw it last year, and it's groovy, man. Like a real blast of 60's pop! Click here for a TRU Deal on tickets. TRU actress Valerie David just got back from Kentucky where she was performing in Neil Simon's Rumors at the Pioneer Playhouse. Nice review from Charlie Cox in The Advocate-Messenger 2006: "Standing out in the cast - which I must point out is a huge feat - is David as the back spasm prone Cookie. David is uniquely tenacious in her performance, and is truly talented as a physical comedian. She's charming, while being completely ludicrous. Now there's a tricky combination." ... My very dear friend Michael Shapiro has a week left of a run of a new musical called Play It Cool at the Celebration Theater in Hollywood. Before Michael moved west, he was one of my closest friends and appeared in several of my shows, musical and non. If you're in California, head over to 7051 Santa Monica Blvd (Saturday 8pm / Sunday 3pm. Tickets $30 / Call 323.957.1884 for reservations). BACKSTAGE WEST says “Shapiro etches a solid characterization as the uptight businessman torn between the straight and gay worlds.” STUDIO CITY SUN writes “Michael Craig Shapiro… is one of the show’s unexpected highlights.” And what I imagine is Michael's favorite quote comes from STEVEN STANLEY THEATER REVIEW BLOG: “Michael Craig Shapiro adds sex appeal." Yeh, he always did. TRU Voices finalist Charles Bloom has mixed emotions that 5 songs of his are in a show in the Woodstock Fringe. He comments, "There's something inherently sad about being the composer with the most material in a show called "Unheard Of." The Woodstock Fringe Festival AMERICAN SONGFEST presents "Unheard Of: A Musical Revue" and if anyone wants to make Charles feel a little better about it, come see the show Fri 8/4 at 8pm, Sun 8/6 at 3pm, Wed 8/16 at 8pm, Thurs 8/17 at 5pm, Sun 8/20 at 3pm at The Byrdcliffe Theatre. For directions and all other information, visit www.woodstockfringe.org or phone 845.810.0123.... TRU Member D.A. Williams tells us his play The Natural Way will have a fourth reading down in his hometown of Baltimore. This one's a sit-down reading on Saturday, September 23 at 8pm, at Fells Point Corner Theatre in Baltimore. The play's story line is an incident of medical malpractice occurring in an inner city emergency department.... Vanda, who is currently in the TRU Producer Mentoring Program, is having gay time as a playwright. Ladies take note: she just had Why'd You Make Me Wear That, Joe? in the Fresh Fruit Festival, and now she's jumping right into the Fringe with Vile Affections.... TRU writer Robin Rice Lichtig was a finalist in Reverie Productions' Next Generation Contest, with her provocative play Humans Remain. Her play Women Without Walls received a WonderWorks reading at The Kraine; Embracing the Undertoad was chosen for a reading at Venus Theatre in D.C.; The Last Frontier had a workshop/reading with New Georges; and other plays have been produced or read at Manhattan TheaterSource, Drama Book Shop, as well as in Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts and California. This Robin is flying all over the place! I guess it's a good thing Frank Williams left TRU as our office administrator a year or so ago. He's gotten pretty busy out there in the real (as opposed to TRU) world, working wtih the Law & Order series and various other TV and Movie productions this past year. He's also preparing to perform in a showcase for the Negro Ensemble Company, a performance of the NEC Classics showcase celebrating 40 years of excellence in Black theatre. The play will be presented at Roy Arias Studios & Theatres at Times Square Arts Center, 300 West 43rd St (8th ave.), Ste. 506. The performances will run every Monday thru the month of August, 2006.... Here's a flash: TRU friend and supporter Barry Morgenstein was voted" Best Headshot Photographer In New York" by Backstage magazine readers! Dear TRU - I loved your liberté, eqalité and COMMUNITE. Well done! ~Libby Hughes I love your TRU updates. I'm guessing that you know plenty about the NY Theater scene, so here goes: How many live theater spaces are there in NYC? In the Fall, I will be hosting an "I Love NY" theme night at the Lambs. My running commentary will be about NYC facts. Do you know the answer to that one? ~Camille Savitz [editor's note: I've never counted. Can anyone answer Camille's question?] Thanks for this update, Bob. An amazing, remarkable [issue]. ~Houston (in San Francisco) I just wanted to say thank you for providing this amazing service to the arts community. I use it all the time myself and direct many of my singing students to it to find what they might need as they progress on their career paths. ~Carol Kirkpatrick Just to let you know that I read and certainly appreciate your updates - especially enjoyed those informative and articulate reviews! From the Philly suburbs ~Louis Lippa * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Thanks again for inviting me to speak on the panel for finding a theatre space. Your article about a member questioning why they should care about Off-Off Broadway Theatres losing their space caught my eye. I'd be happy to respond -- let me know who it is and that person's email -- I think I can shed some non-defensive, reasonable explanation for how (at least how I) choose plays -- it might enlighten that person in a positive, productive way and perhaps even help them get produced. i was interested recently to see your recounting of the disgruntled TRU reader/unproduced playwright and your thoughts on why we should be interested in others besides ourselves. Your practical points are good ones -- personally, I never expected to find myself as the artistic director of an SPT, but in pursuing work as all of us have to do, that's where I am now. Who knows where I'll be in the future, but how helpful it's been so far to have all the knowledge i've picked up from resources like yours, as well as from the many people in fields related to mine whom i've gotten to know or worked beside, while never dreaming I'd need to use the knowledge! But fundamentally i think your attitude about the artistic community is most important. It's a hard business to keep one's head on straight in, sometimes, and I think sanity is helped by an attitude which values and appreciates the work of others as well as one's self, and believes that what goes around comes around, what you reap you sow, and all those other cliches which I think are true. It doesn't hurt me to pay attention to and help someone else, even if it doesn't help me. And who really knows if it WILL help me -- maybe that person will know someone who knows someone who will be discussing me one of these days in a casting session... and frankly, I'd just rather help make the world a better place with my personal conduct as well as my art, if I can. Perhaps this question has been answered in a panel TRU has done: why aren't producers banding together and creating shared spaces more often? Why isn't the city providing more funds, since theater is an enormous draw for tourist dollars, cause most folks don't start right off on Broadway? It's frustrating. I've got another show opening next year, and we had hoped to use the Perry Street again, but now that's gone. The producer has found a great alternative for the show (the Cherry Lane), but what about my next show that might be OOB instead of OB? ~ Randall David * * * * * * * * * * * * * * [Re: "I Produce Dead People" panel] I can say from the bottom of my heart, I really was not expecting such a great panel discussion! I really had no idea it would excite me so much! WOW! ~Jamie Davyous Owens Click here to return to top of page |

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature,
nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.
Avoiding danger is not safer in the long run than outright exposure.
Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
~Helen Adams Keller
If we listened to our intellect, we’d never have a love affair.
We’d never have a friendship. We’d never go into business, because we’d be cynical.
Well, that’s nonsense. You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.
~Ray Bradbury

NEW! BLACK MEN AND BLACK WOMEN FOR TV TALK SHOW!
Eddie is producing and co-hosting a show (with Ron Claiborne) on ABC News Now that is as yet untitled. It's a public affairs show for black people. It is not done in the conventional ABC News way. It is meant to replicate the kind of conversations that we have when we get together in the church parking lot, beauty shop, barbershop, dinner table, playing spades, whatever. It will be the TV version of a typical black conversation about current events, music, sports, pop culture, news with all the energy and Bravado, minus the four letter words. During our first two pilots we addressed: Blacks and Immigration, the Duke Lacrosse rape case, Baby Daddies and Baby Mamas, Colin Powell or Condoleeza Rice for President etc. So I'm putting together a list of potential guests. First show taped Friday 7/28 and every other Friday at 3:30pm. I don't need any experts. Just regular black folks but I'll also take artists, authors, CEO's, professionals. (Uptight people who are charmed by their own intellect need not respond). If you are someone or know someone in NYC who is intelligent, up-on-current-events, witty, lively, funny, opinionated and black -- male or female -- contact Eddie at eddie.pinder@abc.com or 212.456.3746.

Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it arrives? The eagle will fly to a high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it. The eagle does not escape the storm -- It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm.
Growth from challenges is what life is about. When you understand this, you will be able to rise above the winds of the storms. You can soar above the storm. Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down. It is how we handle them. When we are given a challenge in life, it is there for a purpose. So take the energy of the challenge to go figure out the true purpose -- and its solution. Then you will have really soared.
