The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership: the American worker.
~US Department of Labor

If all the cars in the world were laid end to end
it would probably be Labor Day Weekend.
~Doug Larson

Labor Day is a glorious holiday because
your child will be going back to school the next day.
It would have been called Independence Day,
but that name was already taken.

~Bill Dodds

I told Jessica my aerobics instructor I was heading for Altoona, PA for the weekend to see a show that TRU had helped produce. She bubbled, "You lead such an exciting life!" It took me a moment to realize she was serious. Since when was Altoona exciting? Like so many of us, I muddle through from day to day, collecting what I think are consolation prizes in the lottery of life: a small production here, an acknowledgment in a contest there, a grant from a funder who tells me I should be angry instead of grateful because the amount is so small. I barely manage to finish a new play every two years or so because I am so consumed with running TRU. I plod along setting the lyrics to a musical that is now three years in the making. I am behind in a CD I was producing to commemorate a collaborator who passed away three years ago. Nothing seems exciting about my life. It feels like running in place. In slow motion!

Well okay, I was kind of excited that John Anastasi's lovely play Pied a Terre had found a production at Penn State campus, Altoona. And not a college production at that. A full Equity staging with an absolutely gorgeous set, terrific cast, directed skillfully by Bradlee Bing in a handsome 400 seat theater. Rave review in the local papers. And TRU was credited as the lead producer, although a bulk of the work was being done by old-time producer friend Jeff Britton (The Me Nobody Knows) of Broadway Bound Productions. I don't know why I ever thought I wouldn't be taking that 6 hour car ride to Altoona, but I didn't actually commit to it until the day before we left. I knew damn well I wasn't going to drive up and back in a single day, not six hours each way. No way. So the production offered to put us up at the local Quality Inn. They would have paid for a car for us too, but TRU Board member Vickie Phillips stepped in and offered to drive. Well, maybe it was kind of exciting. Especially the drive home Sunday night in a torrential rainstorm with zero visibility. Which added a good hour to the drive time, and several grey hairs to my head. Whoopee!

Heck, seems like everybody's got greener grass, and we don't even have a lawn. It's so hard to recognize our own achievements sometimes, or realize we have a story to tell. Take Vickie, the crazy redhead friend who drove us. I have been working as her director/writer for her cabaret shows for more than ten years now. Until three years ago, I managed to assiduously avoid her favorite writer, Jacques Brel, but she finally convinced me to help her put together a show using Brel's songs. In desperation, I had to ask her: why do you like Brel so damned much? Well, the process of drawing out of her the personal connections to those songs led me to uncover stories about Vickie's childhood and growth into a cabaret performer, bits and pieces of information being laboriously tugged out of her since she is a very private person. "Who cares about my shitty childhood?" she'd snap. But I probed some more, and learned about how she met a young woman from Romania who was being operated on in a hospital in Springfield Massachusetts; and how that meeting led to an invitation to Romania, and a trip to Europe that took her to Vienna, Amsterdam and the birthplace of Brel, Brussels. Why didn't I know any of this? Why didn't Vickie ever talk about it? Because it was her story, and as such, didn't seem that special to her. But what a wealth of rich material for this writer, a goldmine that would have remained undiscovered if I hadn't started digging! And people do care about her "shitty childhood" because people recognize themselves in truths that are told, even if the details are different from their own experiences.

What does it take for us to realize that we matter? We can't all win Tony Awards or Olympic medals. Maybe 5% of the folks in this business are "stars," the visible ones that everyone knows. And admires. And pays. The rest of us just pursue our art and our dream, often wondering why the other guy gets all the breaks. We go along and do our job day by day, trolling for opportunities in this murky swamp of a business, and never realize that we are accumulating a lifetime of achievement. If we ever take a moment to stop and look back, we may actually realize how far we've journeyed. And if we have persevered in the face of adversity, if we have fulfilled some piece of an ambition, if we have learned and grown and forgiven ourselves for our mistakes, we have reason to be proud. My brother screwed up most of his life, and only managed to get off of alcohol and drugs in his 50's; but the fact that he finally did it wins him a Pulitzer Prize for life.

My grandfather unwittingly set a pattern for me of relentless over-achievement. I remember coming home from first grade with my first report card, and proudly pointing to all "A's". "What's the matter, you couldn't do any better?" he asked. He was joking, but at age five I didn't get it. Luckily, many years later I recognized the root of my driven personality and learned to take satisfaction in even small accomplishments. I pat myself on the back a lot, rather than waiting for others to do it. And I do my best to breathe through the frustration when I am overlooked for Kleban, Larsen and Ebb Awards. I haven't made it to the 5%, and perhaps I never will.

Funders and benefactors often ask me what famous people TRU has helped, what well-known theater companies developed through us. It used to make me stammer and pause, until I realized: what difference does it make when we are dedicated to helping the other 95% that keep this business thriving so the fortunate 5% have someplace to work?

So maybe my life is exciting. All our lives are exciting when you understand that life itself is exciting, a moment by moment miracle with every breath we take. The trick is remembering where we've been and what we've done rather than contemplating how far off our dream may be. Heck, I've been to Altoona!

Highlights of the week. I said it before and I'll say it again: A highlight of MY week would be if you sent me suggestions of panels that you would find useful and important! September is set: "Meet the Funders", featuring foundations that fund non-for-profits as well as individual artists. October is "Fiscal Sponsorship versus Not-for-Profit Status". Also planned: "Fringes and Festivals: How to Get in Them, What to Get Out of Them ", "Producing Outside the Box: Site-Specific and Alternative Venues".

November will be our annual Musicals meeting. What would you like us to talk about? What are the hot topics in the musical theater world? Ever hear of Hedy Weiss? Wonder why Hairspray didn't hold up in Vegas? Curious about commercial producers working with not-for-profit theaters? Who would you like to hear on a panel? Talk to me. Talk to me.

Our friends at Amas are on a staffing frenzy, so check out all the paid jobs and internships at this terrifically well-respected company ... another great company also needs interns: Urban Stages... I still need a musical director (male) to go on that Musical Journey with Vickie and me... (see Goods/Help Wanted) ... We're Reaching Out for an artistic director in DC, an artistic director in San Diego, a range of gigs in Philly, production manager at GEVA in Rochester and more!... Casting Urinetown in nearby Edison, and a 30-ish African American actress here in NY (see Casting About)... Is your play or screenplay on the Mark? Metropolitan Playhouse seeking Twain inspirations.... And there's a contest from the Armenian Dramatic Arts Alliance, too. (see The Writers' Block)... A slew of tech jobs here and in NJ, plus a designer in Nashville. (see Technically Speaking) Video services from Kristina. And wow! We finally found someone who does postering and flier distribution here in Manhattan. (Hope they're good - see Services/Goods Offered) ... Join a collective or be a clown (see Workshops/Classes)... Free rehearsal and audition space ... in Nashville! (see Space Patrol) And of course I'm hoping you'll take that Musical Journey with me and Vickie this Sunday 9/10 (click here). You'll be out in plenty of time to go honor Sidney Myer at Roasts, Toasts and Tributes at the Lucille Lortel Theater. (see Theater/Events)

And here are some other immediate needs:

Nice things happen to TRU friends. TRU Voices update: in the 2002 TRU Voices New Musicals Series, finalist Matthew Sheridan's Ambition Bird starred the fabulous Victoria Clark, no less. Nice start for this semi-solo musical about the poet Anne Sexton, which has gone on to fulfill several of Matthew's ambitions: it was part of the National Alliance (NAMT) New Musicals Festival 2003, a winner in the 2005 Global Search for New Musicals and showcased in the 2005 Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre in Cardiff, Wales. And now a staged concert reading of the whole show is planned for early 2007 at Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton, Ohio.... 2003 TRU Voices winner About Face by David Arthur and Jeff Lodin is about to face an international audience: it's one of the six musicals selected for The Global Search For New Musicals in Cardiff, Wales, and will be presented there 11/3-5 as part of the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre. (The show, a contemporary Much Ado about Nothing, has also been invited to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2007). Composer Jeff Lodin also has a second show in the Wales Festival: Top of the Heap, with book and lyrics by William Squire... Lots of news from last year's TRU Voices producers (and winners of the TRU "Producer's Award" by the way), Van Hill Entertainment. That would be soft-spoken Van Dean and spunky Hillary Cutter. They have no less than 3 shows in NYMF this year: 2 readings -- one of them is Saint Heaven, the show from the TRU Series; and 1 showcase -- Paul Scott Goodman's Alive in the World. Additionally, Saint Heaven has won the 2006 NMTN (National Music Theatre Network) Directors' Choice Award. Pretty impressive cast lined up for Alive in the World: 2-time Tony nominee Kelli O'Hara, Marcy Harriell, Aaron Lohr and Greg Naughton. The director is Kurt Deutsch....

Two-timer Rich Orloff has some news. (Oh, that means he was a two-time TRU Voices finalist: Pool Party in 2004 and Companion Pieces in 2005.) The news is that the seven fun comedies in Foreign Affairs, set in seven different countries, are now published and licensed by Playscripts, Inc! Foreign Affairs was originally co-produced by the Foolish Theatre Company and our friends at the WorkShop Theater Company. To read excerpts or order it, visit Rich's page at www.playscripts.com.... Peter Morris, a finalist in our Play Reading Series for Breakfast in the Evil Empire, has an equally wacky musical coming up. You may remember it from the Fringe a year or two ago: Escape from Pterodactyl Island. A concert reading is being produced by TRU member Marie Reynolds in association with our friends Donna Trinkoff and Amas. It's scheduled for October 26/27.

Bob Ost stuff: I'm please to announce that my one-act A Glass of Water made it into finals for the 8-Minute Madness Festival (along with TRU member Mark Butler and others). Come see us duke it out (um, come vote for your favorite) 9/7-15 - click here for details. Did I mention that my show A Musical Journey with the Songs of Brel, Weill and Aznavour is back at The Makor on September 10th? Even cooler, we're booked for the end of October at the Queens Theatre in the Park. You know it by now: the one-woman show I wrote and directed for Vickie Phillips, about her journey through the European songbook, and eventually through Europe. There's a very nice podcast interview with Vickie and me, with interviewer Kelly Lincoln, at http://www.ourmedia.org/node/256358 Hope you'll listen to part or all of it; even better, come to the show. It's $20, but if you email me personally, I have started a TRU reservation list, and we will give you $10 off. I don't believe you can get the discount ordering on-line at The Makor website. Now here's the question for anyone who wants to give me some feedback. I would like to change the name of the show going forward, and the title I am working with is Vickie Shlept Here (A Musical Journey). Discuss.

Congratulations to TRU Program Director Jill Mendelsohn on the birth of her baby boy. His name is Benjamin Isaiah Lam (Jonathan Lam's the daddy) and he came into the world at 8 lbs, 3 ounces.... And welcome to two new members of the TRU Board of Directors: writer/producer June Rachelson-Ospa, who produced two shows in our TRU Voices Musicals Series (Valadon in 2003 and The Adding Machine last year); and Stephanie Riso, newly moved here from Pittsburgh where she was the founder of Cabaret Pittsburgh.

- Dear TRU -
The end of labor is to gain leisure.
~Aristotle

There is precious little hope to be got out of whatever keeps us industrious,
but there is a chance for us whenever we cease work and become stargazers.

~H.M. Tomlinson

I run into people from TRU on my theater jobs, and all speak highly of TRU.... You do good work that is much-valued by the New York theater community.... I did not know much about the theater community [when I first came to TRU]. I know many more people now -- much more about the community -- have gotten the theater "bug" (albeit later in life!) and have come to admire the work you do. ~John Simmons

I am a new subscriber and I think you guys are great! You provide a lot of opportunity for us (I'm an actress) and you do make me smile with your newsletter. Have an outstanding day! ~ Monique Williams

The notices were great this week... Well worth the extra few day's wait! You guys are fabulous and we love you, even if SOME of us forget to tell you often enough. ~ Kevin Kolack

On the other hand:

I suggest that you have an accessible online list of names and email addresses of people in the theater willing to be consulted by TRU members who are beginners as producers and need advice, I don't see what use your organization is to us otherwise, as your casting notices duplicate those of other publications and your seminars are periodic and too expensive. ~Barbara L.

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING
Labor Day differs in every essential from other holidays of the year in any country.
All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with
conflict and battles of man’s prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power,
of glories achieved by one nation over another.
Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race or nation.
~ Samuel Gompers

GOT A SET TO BREAK DOWN? NEED A SET TO PUT UP?
The Set Recycling Hot-line lets you give away your set pieces to a show that needs them, or get the pieces you need.
It works like this: a show is closing, and needs to get rid of its set. Rather than throw it out, they can give it to you. Or you need some specific set pieces, and you want to find out if anyone out there has them. Of course, none of this works unless you plan well in advance and list your offers/needs at least a month ahead of time. It's a matter of timing. And all the carting is up to you - there's no handy trucking service connected with this. For more info, or to start using the service, call Julia Rubin at 212.673.6343. Please mention TRU!

- TRU WORD OF MOUTH -
I don't care what anybody says about me as long as it isn't true.
~ Dorothy Parker

NEW -

I read some stuff on Playbill.com about Play It Cool and we decided to see it mainly because it got (mostly) good reviews in LA and we had an afternoon to kill before our flight home (we were taking the redeye.) The show itself is so-so, but all the performances are top-notch and the jazz score is terrific. ~Doug D.

I don't often do this, but I had such a good time at LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE that I want to pass on the good news. It's a small movie that was a fave at Sundance, and you'll see why: while upholding the centrality and importance of family, it manages to skewer and in some cases outright burlesque "the American way of life." In short, it's a comedy with brains, insight, real family values," and many laughs. It's neither smarmy nor stupid, just a slightly ragged but very effective comedy with a terrific cast. ~David Copelin

REVIEWS OF THE MIDTOWN INTERNATIONAL THEATER FESTIVAL (LOL, The Wastes of Time, Motion and Location, Pie-Obsessed Drunken Fatties, Sex and Sealing Wax, the Sibling, MentalPause and The Quiet Model):

Perhaps the strongest piece in this year’s Midtown Festival is the dark and sexy LOL by Tony Sportiello. The show has the perhaps unfair advantage of previous productions with the same director and one key cast member, and therefore it might stand out in any festival for its polished performances and precise direction. Yet director Jerry Less has kept things simple, with actors on chairs and stools and not much else. Not much else besides brilliant comic turns by Greg Skura as the protagonist/narrator Danny, a romance-starved writer of romance novels, and Nicole Taylor as Karen, a female alter-ego he creates in order to roam Bisexual-Fem chat rooms to learn more about how to please women. Skura is sweetly low-key and convincingly befuddled, awkward, unassuming, overwhelmed, innocent and desperate in a kaleidoscope of emotional hairpin turns that drive the juicy, sexy, surprising yet inevitable plot. Taylor, the one who’s done the role before, is simply astonishing as a figment of Danny’s mind come to life, a sexual kewpie doll with the soul of Chuckie and the libido of Catherine the Great; she manages to breathe complex and credible life into this fantasy creation, and finds both the churlish brat and the ravishingly compassionate woman in what could have otherwise been a plot device. Kari Swenson Riely is vulnerable and heartbreaking as Jenny, the fragile object of unreal Karen’s genuine affection. The entire cast is pitch perfect, and Less has choreographed their physical and emotional moves with sensitivity and humor. LOL? Well, it’s not consistently laugh-out-loud funny, especially considering how dark it ultimately becomes; but it is consistently engaging. The story has more psychological heft than the author allows – it could be a truly harrowing examination of a psychotic rift in the mind of a man trying to get in touch with his feminine side, but an easy-out ending keeps the play moored in the Twilight Zone rather than allowing it to soar among the stars. Catch the last performance tonight (Saturday) at 10:30pm at the WorkShop Mainstage, 312 W. 36th Street.

Almost as satisfying for far different reasons is the tender, compassionate The Wastes of Time by Duncan Pflaster who is truly too gentle a soul for this world of ours. Still, Pflaster has bravely etched three memorable characters and set them dancing emotionally against the backdrop of the gay disco scene and AIDS. Yes, this is an AIDS play, but one that handles the subject with disarming naturalness and perspective. Out and in his 20’s, Jess is weary of the shallowness of his peers and ripe for a relationship with the older and only sometimes wiser David, conservatively buttoned-down and harboring provocative though disturbing thoughts on the purpose of AIDS in our society. Jess Cassidy White is spirited and sweet as the young Jess, and commands attention in every moment he is on stage. But the richest, quirkiest and most complex acting is from Susan Barnes Walker as every gay boy’s dream mom, understanding and accepting to a fault; yet when her Flower Child breeding eventually crack and gives way to rage and outrage, she is frightening and compelling. The deep dark secret that gradually comes out, that binds these three characters in unexpected ways, is actually a bit too pat and predictable. But I have no better ideas to offer Pflaster, so if a convenient plot device is what he needs to raise the stakes and generate drama, so be it. I cared about these people, deeply. And even more important, I recognized them. Catch the last performance tonight (Saturday) at 10pm at the WorkShop Jewel Box, 312 W. 36th Street.

It’s been two years since TRU presented Motion and Location by Lorna Littleway in our own series, and here it is in a next-step production at MITF. So okay – I’m prejudiced. I feel this is an extremely well-written, warm and funny piece about matters multi-cultural; specifically, the tug of war between sports and academics on black teenage Clarissa, as embodied by her gay baseball all-star Aunt Bo on one side and her middle class-aspiring mom on the other.  I think I detected some rewrites here and there, including an overly long opening monolog by Aunt Bo about baseball delivered far too early for us to care, one of the few errors in a near-perfectly pitched game. And Geany Masai is a larger-than-life and charismatic actress, but she never seemed to settle comfortably into the role of Mother; her struggles with line readings slowed the pace and made the play seem somewhat more labored and solemn than it felt in the lightening quick, thoroughly engaging TRU reading. But Suzanne Froix is strong and convincing as Aunt Bo, and Angela Arnold is an absolute treasure as Clarissa, strong-willed and moody and touching as a teen coming to terms with her life choices, including ones about her sexuality. It continues to be guided by the able hand of TRU friend Sue Lawless, one of the finest directors of comedy on the planet. Catch the last performances today (Saturday) at 11am (good morning – get dressed and get down there), and tomorrow (Sunday) at 7:45 at the WorkShop Mainstage, 312 W. 36th Street.

Pie-Obsessed Drunken Fatties has a great title, two thoroughly engaging writer/performers and actual servings of pie. It just needs a little more play. This seemingly random combo of monologs dances on the edge of being a coherent evening, and with a bit more development could successfully travel the fringe circuit. The pairing of performers is an interesting one, though, with sub-textual significance that could be further explored. Marjorie Suvalle is a perky young thing with curly blonde hair and an edge of nuttiness that needs to be loosened just a bit more; it doesn’t quite come naturally to her yet, but she shows promise as a comic actress. Julie Perkins is an older counter-part, also blonde but with her nuttiness raging in two of the most savagely comic portrayals I have ever seen of women beyond the verge of a nervous breakdown. Floating in there somewhere is the sense that Suvalle is a young everywoman going through the disillusions of disastrous dating that will turn her into the darkly and delightfully crazed Perkins. Interestingly, Suvalle is more successful at creating the mannerisms of the men she is dating than in finding a convincing persona for herself. They interact midway in a wildly choreographed prom dance that may just suggest that they both need to leave men behind and reach out to each other. It is directed with a firm hand by Michael Ormond. This is a work-in-progress, and I genuinely hope these two talented ladies will continue to explore their themes, and perhaps even find other interesting ways to interact.

I caught the return engagement of Romy Nordlinger’s Sex and Sealing Wax, and was impressed with the work she has done on the piece since last year’s festival. This is a loose exploration of seven loose female characters, and how their self-images have been shaped by our mass media culture. Nordlinger’s characterizations and monologs are sharper now, including a much clearer and better thought out Latina waitress refusing to justify her life choices to her self-righteously conservative sister; and the videotaped “Existential Makeover” segments that provide a thru-line for the evening (with Romy as a demented cosmetic surgeon) are better produced and projected on a much nicer backdrop, albeit one that resembles a TV screen on steroids. References to Alice Through the Looking Glass pop up here and there, but the themes are still as elusive as that shadowy rabbit who keeps scurrying through. Still, Nordlinger is a gifted monologist with a flair for character detail and a nice command of her vocal and physical technique. Did I mention she strips at the end? Catch her last performance tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:45pm at Where Eagles Dare, 347 W. 36th Street.

The Siblings is an interesting exercise in stylized presentation, skillfully directed by Edward Elefterion, employing sparse set pieces, a Kabuki-like prop woman in black who punctuates moments with sound effects, and simple but effective lighting that gives it a look and feel that is different from anything else in the festival. It is a dark, dark take on the Hansel and Gretel story, with Biblical undertones and themes of faith and the existence of God. It all unfolds with deceptive simplicity that branches out into complex philosophical complications upon complications. It held my interest, but I longed for something richer and more poetic – or more sardonic – in the play’s language. It all looked great but sounded rather flat, which may have been the point. But it does tease the brain and leave a haunting memory. Catch the last performance tomorrow (Sunday) at 11am at The Workshop Mainstage, 312 W. 36th Street.

MentalPause is worth catching if you admire good dancing. Writer/performer Margaret Liston moves exquisitely and is consistently compelling in the dance portions of her show. There is much that is honest and real in the script, but its fresh perceptions about that happy time called menopause were few and far between for me, although I am perhaps not the target audience. The show needs a stronger structure; it hasn’t yet found a dramatic arc for its presentation of the raging mood swings of a woman confronting change of life. And it features a very sloppy parody of Porter’s “Let’s Do It” that used jarringly bad rhymes and slipshod scansion, and lowers the overall standards of a promising piece. One more show tomorrow (Sunday) at 3pm at the WorkShop Mainstage, 312 W. 36th Street.

The Quiet Model is one of the best looking plays in the festival. Director Chelsea Miller creates consistently strong stage pictures, and uses props, gauzy blue fabric, moody lighting and period-like costumes to give the show a veneer of professionalism. I fear she has neglected the actors, however, and failed to guide them to a clear understanding of the text. I caught many misreadings of lines throughout, dramatic inflections that seemed counter to the emotion of the moment, histrionics often drowning out the basic meaning of the text. I believe Miller is true to playwright L.A. Mitchell’s intentions, but I would prefer a bit more substance to support the style. Last show is tomorrow (Sunday) at 7pm at the MainStage Jewel Box, 312 W. 36th Street.

Lou Rodgers piece "Wake of the Essex" at Midtown International Theatre Festival is fabulous. Beautifully written and performed. ~Julie Halpern
